Personally I've always associated it with the Wrkncacnter from Marathon and Bungie has already confirmed several times that Marathon and Destiny are connected as far back as D1 and Marathon Infinity's ending. Not to mention that it is very similar to the hidden female antagonist of Marathon who has been referred to as The Dark / The Darkness
