THE RISE AND FALL OF THE PURPLE GANG

The Purple Gang, also known as the Sugar House Gang, was an organized crime group made up primarily of Jewish gangsters that engaged in bootlegging and hijacking. During the Prohibition era in the 1920s, they operated in Detroit, Michigan, and eventually became the city’s most powerful criminal organization. The 1930s saw the gang completely disintegrate due to excessive violence and internal strife.

  1. My Great Grandfather on my mother's side was a police officer in St. Clair County, MI and was kidnapped and held for a short time by the Purple Gang. On the flipside my Great Grandfather on my dad's side was a bootlegger out of Canada.
I was always told they were called The Purple Gange because they wore purple carnation flowers in the lapels of their suits.
You should check out Al Profits channel he has a video on the gang as well and he's from Detroit.

  2. Thank You. Very interesting. I was raised in Detroit & my father mentioned the Purple Gang. He didn't say much other than some of his family had problems with them. This video explained much. Incidentally, I will always remember how the Rouge River smelled. It absolutely reeked from the industrial waste poured into it by the Ford plant. I have never smelled anything like it before or since and that smell will be in my brain for the rest of my life. Thanks again
