Dupes (Duplicates)/Species Clause: if you catch a Pokémon , and encounter that same Pokémon on a different route as your first encounter, you may choose to attempt to catch the next Pokémon that has not yet been caught. No one wants 6 Rattata on a team because that's all you encountered
Species clause bans catching the same Pokémon of an evolution line in addition to Dupes Clause. Dupes Clause is optional generally, so if I want 5 rattata and that pidgey I also rerolled for, great! But it can get boring with 3 Gyarados, so you only get 1 max
