Ever been to Chessington South station? It seems like a fairly innocuous branch line terminus station, located in the peaceful suburbs of South West London. But look a little closer, and a fascinating story begins to emerge – of a station frozen in time, a ghost platform that’s never seen a passenger in its life, and tracks that continue on to seemingly nowhere! Let’s take a trip to the fascinating little station at Chessington South ^_^

  2. 4:34 I think the original plan was for the platforms to be linked via Subway, and I believe some remnants of it still remain down there somewhere, but that would also explain why you couldn't find any way onto that platform, as a Subway is not as obvious as a footbridge and has all been sealed off anyway!

    Great video! I've always found this branch fascinating so it's always nice when someone makes a nice little video like this about it!

  3. Nice video, Chessington South is one of those quirky stations, I think it GBRF or DB Cargo that operates the recent freight but makes you wonder what happened if it ended up at Leatherhead, would the whole line ended up closing or kept open?

  4. Desperately finds way to link this to NCL

    OK so SWR operate 707s to here sometimes
    707s are from the same family of trains as the 717s that operate on the NCL

    Could also use that some of the 455s that operate on the line have class 508 trailer cars inserted into them. The 508 is from the same family of trains as the 313 which used to operate on the NCL

  5. Used to go there every day as my school was there Fleetwood county sec school got the train from Chessington North one stop away now lazy was that,the coal depot was still there when I left in 1962

  6. You should take a ride on the new South Western Railway Class 701 Arterios when they are up and running hopefully later this year. With the remaining Class 707s cascaded to Southeastern.

  7. Oh, that ended suddenly. I kind of hoped you might be going to show us a bit of the continuation…Curiousity whetted, I had a look at the 'Streetmap' Ordnance Survey 1:25,000 and indeed it goes on about 750m, petering out into a siding. Google Maps/Google Earth show a bit of the track south of Chessington South station until the trees cover it. But it is pretty clear that the unused 1939 prepared railtrack base extends 1.5km or so further to the B280 (Rushett Lane), now used by paths leading on to Ashstead Station. Was that to be the route? I thought it would have gone down by Rushetts Farm, alongside the A24 connecting up with a southward facing junction to the Leatherhead and Dorking line near Leatherhead Common (now built over by the M25 motoway).

  8. THat train would not be back for several hours, as they work a roster going to Woking, Guildford via Epsom, Chessington, and Guidford via Cobham in rotation.

    It shows a remarkable lack of enterprise from SWT and now SWR, along with Chessington World of Advantures, that they never extended to line over the existing embankment to Chalky Lane, about half a mile further, which is 100 yards from the entranceto Chessington World of Adventures. Instead, visitors have to tramp along the busy A243 from Chessington South (or more likely they drive all the way) .

  9. In the final shot of your video that shows the train departing from the operating platform, if you look up you can see a blue wooden “door”. This was going to be the footbridge that would have gone over the tracks, linking the two platforms, enabling passengers to access the platform that never opened from the main station entrance / booking hall.

  10. It has been eight months since we last had a video from you, and I fear you may have alighted at a disused platform never to be seen or heard of again. Life is better with your videos than without and I look forward to seeing more arriving. Of course, actually finding any trains running to talk about might be a challenge…..

  11. Not an aggressive comment in any way, but just a comment: Please don't get into the jump cuts so beloved of YouTubers in Retardistan (aka 'merrica). It doesn't appeal to me, and I suspect that applies to much of your audience. They have their uses, but don't get too embroiled. Your content is, as always, superb.
