Breath of the Wild was a game that reimagined the Zelda formula, presenting players with a vast open world to explore. Tears of the Kingdom continues this trend, but with subtle changes that make the world feel fresh and exciting. The map is marked with opportunities for exploration and curiosity, and Hyrule feels both serene and bustling with life. The score complements the game perfectly, emphasizing battles and escapes while allowing players to soak in the atmosphere.
One of the most significant improvements in Tears of the Kingdom is the addition of flexible tools for engaging with the world. These tools are the engine that drives the game, encouraging players to build and experiment to overcome obstacles in inventive ways. The two most crucial abilities, Ultrahand and Fuse, serve as the cornerstones of exploration and combat, respectively. Ultrahand lets players piece together almost anything they find, while Fuse allows players to modify their weapons and shields with a vast array of combinations. Attaching Zonai fan parts to a raft can help it cross a river or make it airborne, and a bomb on a shield can send players flying through the air with shield-surfing.
The other two abilities granted in the tutorial area, Recall and Ascend, are more limited in scope but still crucial. Recall lets players rewind objects back to a previous state, while Ascend allows players to swim upwards through solid rock. Autobuild, an extension of the Ultrahand ability, is another key tool that lets players stitch together machine parts to construct designs quickly and efficiently.
All of these building tools and the Ascend ability make climbing easier and more natural, while the Skyview Towers serve as waypoints for filling out the map and as cannons to launch players far into the sky. As players ascend, they’ll reach another layer of the map, where the Sky Islands reside, with their own secrets to uncover. The seamless sequence of Link launching into the air and falling back to earth feels thrilling every time, and the vantage point as players descend allows them to float towards a goal or look around for undiscovered secrets.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is an ambitious and rewarding game that builds upon the foundation of Breath of the Wild. It takes the best elements of the series’ history and creates something new and emotionally resonant. The flexible tools for engaging with the world encourage experimentation and creativity, while the Skyview Towers and Sky Islands add a new dimension to exploration. This is The Legend of Zelda at its finest, and we can’t wait for you to experience it for yourself. Thanks for watching, and don’t forget to like and subscribe for more gaming content!
