Outbreak Day
Outbreak Day is the date that the Cordyceps brain infection reached critical mass. It occurred on September 26th, 2013, and reached Austin in the early morning hours of September 27th, 2013.
Though the infection had been rising in intensity for days, it reached such a state when people began to be admitted to hospitals. The infection spread quickly in cities like Austin, eventually being confirmed to have spread nationwide.
A state of national emergency was declared. The military and the National Guard were mobilized quickly in the early hours of the morning, blocking the highway, setting up a base for residents to flee to for refuge. News networks tried to inform people of this safe area, including Rose Graham, but many went off the air shortly after the start of the outbreak. Outside Austin, several infected patients, having transformed into runners, escaped from the nearby hospital and attacked people trapped on the highway due to the high amount of traffic.
Much of the city erupted into chaos due to the outbreak. Police cars rushed to various areas in the city, setting up roadblocks to contain citizens believed to be infected, only to be overrun by them. Buildings were set ablaze, some even exploding due to gas leaks despite the army’s efforts to intervene.
The outside country areas of the city were much quieter. Joel and Sarah’s area only appeared to have one infected, Jimmy Cooper. Many residents in these areas fled towards the city due to the advice on the radio and television, unaware of the chaotic events occurring.
Joel would later look back on that day and comment about how “families were torn apart” and how it was “a God-awful mess.”
The Last of Us has never been your run-of-the-mill zombie outbreak; instead of the undead, the monsters in the game are people that have been infected by a type of mutated fungus, the Cordyceps brain infection (CBI). Beyond just being an interesting take on post-apocalyptic infected humans, the fungus in The Last of Us is a type of mutated Cordyceps fungus, a real-life ‘zombifying’ fungus.
Like the fungus in the game, Cordyceps are parasitic, infecting their hosts and using their bodies as spawning grounds. Most Cordyceps prefer insects and arthropods, such as ants; after the creature becomes infected, the fungus takes over the host’s ‘mind,’ so to speak. The host creature will begin to act abnormally – its movements may become erratic, it will stop eating, and, in many cases, it will climb to a high point, such as a tall plant or branch. This is so the fungus has the best possible reach once it releases its spores, which it does after growing out of the host’s body like some gruesome science-fiction alien.
It’s all very disturbing, especially for the poor insect victims, but luckily for humans, Cordyceps don’t seem to be much of a threat… in real life, of course. In The Last of Us, the fungus is very deadly, turning its unfortunate host into a mindless killing machine, before overtaking the body entirely and turning it into a walking spore bomb.
