Show Description:
The Last of Us is an American post-apocalyptic drama television series created by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann for HBO. Based on the 2013 video game developed by Naughty Dog, the series is set in 2023, twenty years into a pandemic caused by a mass fungal infection, which forces its hosts to transform into zombie-like creatures and collapses society. The series follows Joel (Pedro Pascal), a smuggler tasked with escorting the teenage Ellie (Bella Ramsey) across a post-apocalyptic United States. Guest stars include Nico Parker as Joel’s daughter Sarah, Gabriel Luna as Joel’s younger brother Tommy, Merle Dandridge as resistance leader Marlene, and Anna Torv as Joel’s smuggler partner Tess.

The Last of Us was filmed throughout Alberta from July 2021 to June 2022. It is the first HBO series based on a video game, and is a joint production by Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, Naughty Dog, the Mighty Mint, and Word Games. Druckmann, who wrote and co-directed the original game, assisted Mazin with scriptwriting for the nine episodes of the first season. The score was composed by Gustavo Santaolalla, who composed for the game, and David Fleming.

The Last of Us premiered on January 15, 2023. It received acclaim from critics, who praised the performances, writing, production design, and score; several called it the best adaptation of a video game. Across linear channels and HBO Max, the series premiere was watched by 4.7 million viewers on the first day—the second-biggest for HBO since 2010—and almost 40 million within two months; by March, the first six episodes averaged over 30 million viewers. In January 2023, the series was renewed for a second season.

  1. Bang on comment about the pacing not really showing the Joel and Ellie connection developing. I felt she went from “cargo” to surrogate daughter way to quickly. Pretty much agree with everything else you said. I loved episode three but in the context of the final run of the 9 episodes it was wasted time, same with the Sam & Henry. Still the best tv adaptation of a game I’ve ever watched. Ultimately not a patch on the story experience when playing the game. Good review dude from a 60 year old UK lifelong gamer. 👍

  2. I agree with the pacing and there were barely any infected here. It’s bizarre since the infection and the infected are a huge part of The Last of Us’ world. However, I think it might have been more because of budgeting

  4. Totally agree with everything you've said and I definitely prefer the game, but tbf to the show I think it was better at showing how screwed up Joel's decision was.

This may even be an effect of us not spending as much time with Joel and Ellie, because when I first played the ending of the game I felt like a hero and it took me a while to realise I was looking at it a little wrong…

  5. so since we're being not picky, I also missed the parts in the game where a lot is silence, the suspense of nothing or silence that the game emphasizes is not that apparent here. And yes it is a good adaptations n but 2 more eps for certain moments to be "more" u know.

  6. Spot on. The show felt rushed and I didn't really feel like Joel & Ellie had been on a journey.

The lack of violence and grit compared to the game was a huge let down for me. I wasn't feeling emotional at the end, which confirms that it was rushed and not enough time was spent with the characters.

An entertaining series for sure, with good casting for the main characters but the pacing, lack of infected, short lived 'Hunters' and reduced violence resulted in an ultimately disappointing series.

  7. It’s been great discussing the show with people that haven’t played the game and seeing them invested in the characters and the story. As a fan of the game, as much as I loved the show it left with me wanting more, which is a good thing as I’m stoked it’s got a season 2/season 3 green lit.

  8. I loved the show, I was so glad they nailed the ending as it was my favorite part of the game and I'll never forget how it made me feel. Bella and Pedro were incredible and I can't wait for more even though I know its going to wreck me.

  9. I never played the game. But I LOVED the show!! Pedro & Bella were so awesome together. I was so emotionally invested & I'm sad it's over. Also for the record, I'm totally team Joel & what he did taking Ellie out of the hospital. I can't wait for S2!!

  10. After the show, I started up the game. I just gotta say. Ellie, in game, is so much nicer and level headed lol I remember Ellie pretty much starting out like a bad ass, but compared to Bella, she's calm. Part of the reason I connect with the video game character more, I suppose. Nothing against Ramsey, but she came off more obnoxious when I think they were trying to make her feisty (in the first half of the show). Anyway, just doing a play through right now and just surprised by how Ellie was more sweet than I remember, prior to her and Joel being close.
