Our First Time Watching: The Last of Us *Infected*! In 2003, authorities in Jakarta ask Dr. Ratna, a mycology professor, to examine the corpse of a woman who was recently killed after attacking her co-workers at a flour factory. Ratna notices the corpse has a human bite mark on its leg and fungal growths in its mouth. After learning the growths have been identified as Cordyceps and several workers from the same factory are missing, the military officer, asks her what can be done to prevent further spread. Ratna tells him to bomb the city and wipe out everyone living in it.
In 2023, Joel and Tess hold Ellie at gunpoint and demand to know why they were tasked with escorting her. Ellie reveals the Fireflies have established a secret camp out west with doctors working on a vaccine to prevent infection.
As the group make their way towards the Massachusetts State House, Tess discovers a large pack of infected blocking the route she planned to use, explaining to Ellie the fungi can sense uninfected humans across long distances and draw its hosts towards them.
Joel shoots an infected Firefly who tries to attack them, revealing their location to other infected hosts in the city. Tess tells Joel to take Ellie to fellow smugglers Bill and Frank, since they will be able to help. She covers the room with gasoline and grenades as Joel and Ellie leave. An infected man begins the process of converting Tess when she ignites the building, killing the creatures. Joel and Ellie watch as the State House explodes before Joel walks away.

Can't wait for more u guys are great
I’m loving the series so far!
also Joel didn't get his birthday pancakes because they were all out of the mix. & he forgot to get his birthday cake. & the Jakarta outbreak started at a flour mill. I think it's pretty close to "confirmed".
As a huge fan of the games, I didn't care for the 1st episode until I forced myself to rewatch it with an unbiased opinion. This episode sold me on this adaptation, however. It's a lot scarier than the game and the game was pretty freakin scary during the 1st playthrough. This series and your channels steady uploads have been a great start to 2023! Grateful to you both!
Already episode 2 and it’s amazing! Cant wait to see you react to the future episodes!
Watching full reaction on Patreon while reading all the comments here on YouTube 🤗🤗
Neil Druckman directed this episode which is why it’s so good
4:35 not only cookies! they hinted at the flour from the very beginning. Sarah wanted to make pancakes, but Joel hadn't bought the mix, so none of them, including Tommy, consumed flour. and then Joel forgot to buy a birthday cake as well!
And yeah the spores aren’t in the show. They’re instead doing the tendril thing. Which I feel is much scarier.
Ellie is a kleptomaniac. I bet that she pocketed the two grenades that fell at her feet in the end. And the bloater can come.
LOVED the first part of this episode, something new, hopefully they keep building up the world and the journey of the fungus around the story. I'm just wondering if they're going to reach the Apex of the game in the first season, 2nd or where?
9:29 WHAT? You cut out the boosting you were asking for in the 1st episode?
I admit to being a dumb American lol…but can I ask where Ms. Trins accent is from its amazing 🥰 your ok too man lol
You guys should wait til the end of the credits, there's a behind the episode, & this one was about the making of the clickers!
It's only 5 min or so, but it's very interesting. 🤘😁
* Oh yeah, it also explains why they changed a couple things…
This was personally a big step down compared to the first episode except the beginning where the tension is very similar to Chernobyl.
They completely desecrated Tess's character in my opinion, in the game she goes out like a badass fending FEDRA, in this one she goes out while getting french kissed by a stalker with dumb tension created by a malfunctioning lighter when she had grenades at hand.
And you're not really attached to her at all, they tried by her telling Ellie "sister" and praising her, but personally I didn't feel anything when she died compared to the game. Eliie while she was worried about her she didn't have to be dragged by Joel.
Also not impressed by Bella's and Anna's acting, specially Bella's, I'm not convinced by her Ellie interpretation, personally Pedro is carrying the show right now. Not doubting the actors skills, it could be the director or the script…
The clicker scene was amazing though, props to the actors playing them, amazing scene.
The hivemind/tendrils replacing spores I think is unnecessary but I'll wait and see what they do with it.
This episode really isn't worth of a 9 IMO, it's ok, maybe a 7.
no spoilers. Glad you're enjoying the surprises. I think the scipt doesn't work quite right for Joel, Ellie and even Tina's personality as if the writers are pushing the envelope to make them as unlikeable as possible without breaking the story. Which isn't wrong by itself, but not quite the direction I bet they intend to go and a lot of fans seem to be overlooking this issue.
As a lifelong Bostonian, it's creepy to see my city decimated but I'm so impressed by the production value. Didn't pick up on the flour aspect. Thanks for pointing it out.
I hope this isn't a spoiler thumbnail. I guess I will find out in a couple of days when I watch this episode…
Never played the game and still adore this! Very happy to see Anna Torv as I am also a fan of Fringe.
7:33 is that toy giraffe a reference to when Ellie stopped to pat the real giraffe? 😮
Ellie's FU attitude and Joel's FTW attitude are perfect together. I knew when she suddenly got in a hurry, she's infected. That was so good!!
I don't have knowledge of the game so this is all brand new for me. 2 episodes in and I've cried during both! I watched it because I'm a huge TWD fan and thought it would be similar. It's nothing like TWD. That said, I'm thoroughly impressed and your reactions are equally impressive. I watch the episode then wait for your reaction so I can have my questions answered and get a little therapy lol.
I need to ask…. did ya'll watch the after scenes where they talked about how the show was done and how the infected were created? That shed alot of light on the show, for me.
Anyway, thanks for all you do 🥰
Lol if you let go of that type of lighter it goes out and no explosion. That's it's safety feature.
I love the little touch of when Ellie played with the bell it made the sing ding ding it makes in the game when there's a point of interest
Yeast is a fungus used to make bread
Craig Mazin on fire man. After I hearing his name, knowing from the Chernobyl miniseries, I knew it would be good but I did not expected this good. Glad he proved himself and HBO opened the budget valves for him. I think I might heard some people criticized the casting but the cast is on point; couldn't be better.
I saw an interview with Anna Torv and she said when they were filming the museum scene, they had practised the choreography of the fight and then when it came to filming, they brought in the clickers …all prosthetics and make up, no CGI at all. She said they didnt have to act terrified, they WERE terrified.
Re the flour thing, I was one of the people who commented on that theory. It's an old fan theory from the game. The producers obviously liked it and decided to include all the clues in the Sarah bit at the beginning and add the Jakarta scenes. I liked it, it works well. Not entirely scientifically accurate (I used to work in a public health laboratory before becoming an RN), but it adds a satisfactory level of explanation that you will never get from zombies, vampires and werewolves.
Also Druckman was talking about the Tess death kiss, he said that what they were shooting for, was Tess sort of giving in to the fungus in an almost accepting, loving embrace. That her clicks on the lighter were getting less frequent as she was getting overcome by the fungus and the very last bit of her that was Tess, just managed the final strike. Excellent.
Also, in the game our crew had been killing Fedra soldiers for a while and it made sense for Fedra to pursue them to the museum, but in the show, there was no logical reason for Fedra to hunt them outside of the QZ, They would just be risking lives for no reason, so they had to change it up.
The reason they dont have spores, is that the actors would be acting through gas masks for 30% of the show if they had included them. So they had to change that up too …and I think that might be why we've seen the introduction of the mycelium network.
Loving it so far. The changes make sense and the source material is being handled with respect …and it looks stunning. The backgrounds are obviously CGI, but they are really well done.
I’ve never played this game . But now I wants it.. yes
If you spotted it, there was a giraffe toy when they were walking through Boston… a little nod/Easter egg to the game with the interaction to the wild giraffes.
Yeah…that's a big difference between TWD and Last of Us. 2 walkers aren't that big of a deal…you can manage that fairly easy, but 2 Clickers are a big problem as we saw in this episode…
I think they really did the Clickers justice for sure. But one thing I kinda really don't like is how they made it where it doesn't spread thru air as I'm sure you know since you've played the game lol but I digress. But they added those white fungus string things in place so I mean ig
I like how they expanded on the spread of the cordyceps by introducing the contaminated flour. It gets shipped to the rest of the world and the world is fucked. In the game it could be reasonable to assume that only the Americas were affected as anyone infected travelling by plane or boat between America and other continents would turn before they got there. One gripe i have with the last of us is the use of the term vaccine as there have never been any approved vaccines for fungal infection (vaccines being a medicine that applies a small dose of a pathogen to train the immune system to fight it off). Vaccines are primarily used for viruses as they can't be treated effectively with other medicine. If literally anyone, especially a doctor, says they can use ellie to make anti-fungals I'll be so happy
If you guys like Anna Torv’s acting, you should react to the series Fringe! She’s one of the lead characters, and the subject matter is right up your alley.
I’m so glad I don’t have the burden to know what happens in the game like most people do. I love the way it’s going even if the game looked better or worse.
it spreaded through the flour and wheat so not having the pancake mix. not getting the birthday cake ,not taking the neighbors biscuits and sarah not eating the cookies saved them from getting infected
pretty sure i read somewhere the budget per episode was 10 million kinda wish walking dead had that type of budget
Fun fact: They did away with the spores so the actors wouldn't have to wear masks. But they needed another way for the fungus to spread…so they did the living fungus thing.
I am somewhat of a gamer but I knew I could not handle this game so I didn't even try…but I have watched playthroughs on YouTube and I love LoU 1 & 2. I know these games like the back of my hand and I'm so impressed with this adaptation of the game.
I appreciate the changes…it's similar to how TWD varied from the comics so it was still worth the watch for those who read the comics.
I see I'm not the only one who was stressed when Joel was loading his gun…I thought the flashlight was gonna fall. 😓
I’m going to have to replay the remake now! Keep going with these.
Love your brother, Chris
You have no idea how happy I am to see you react to this masterpiece on your channel. I've been a big fan of the game since 2013
overgrowth occurs within 6 months of humans not living in an area. there is a doc i forget its name something like "after man" or something like that. goes into good details about how if we didnt sweep and what not it would happen while we are around too. think about the sidewalk and having to edge it all the time, 1x in winter 2x in summer.
Obv there were alot of disturbing stuff in this episode but smth i wont forget and i want to see more of is when they were walking in the city how immersive it was.. the overgrowth.. the feels.. the tension in the closed doors scenes too just mygod mygod so good
11:40 we all know the AI won't count Ellie's noises but only Joel's, as we see at 14:45
The thing I hate about this show is the fact they are copying the game like for like it's annoying, At least in the walking dead they changed a few things from the comics, The last of us has no differences I already know the next scene from playing the games, and nothing seems shocking when you already know the outcome, disappointing imo.
Just to add to the flour link. In E1 they were out of pancake mix and Joel forgot the cake all of which contain flour.
