Ok so The Last Of Us centres around a deadly infection caused by funghi known as the Cordyseps. These real world parasites can be found in nature and what’s most terrifying about the Last Of Us is that there is basis in science for something like this to happen.

Episode 1 of the HBO show opens with a scientist theorising the rise of them all the way back in the 60s and like he says, there’s no cure.

But where did the infection originate from and how did it spread so quickly?

Well throughout this video we’re gonna be breaking down everything we know about how it began and the theories about how it spread so quickly. If you enjoy the video then please hit the thumbs up button and don’t forget to subscribe for videos like this every day. With that out the way, thanks for clicking this, now let’s get into The Last Of Us.

Now when looking at where it all started I think that the first place to go to is the game. The playstation classic doesn’t give us too much of a backstory on where it originated from but there are teases found in documents. When looking through newspapers we come across the Texas Herald which reported on the infection. On September 26th it reported that admittance at hospitals was up 300% due to the infection.

The FDA also released a statement about contaminated crops and that massive recalls were expected. This of couse didn’t happen but the statement did give us a clue about what was happening. It said:

So there are clues that it’s coming from countries with a hotter climate. This was teased at in the initial science report at the start and 2003 is listed as being one of the hottest years on record.

Now though it’s not in South America, we do hear a report in episode 1 that there is something strange going on in Jakarta. This indonesian city is located in Asia and they might have changed this from South America for us to explore it in a later episode. During filming of the show people from Jakarta posted that things were being filmed in the city so we could possibly see this coming down the line at some point.

  2. but wait guys – if flour brought the infection, shouldn't it be much slower and not so sudden? I mean, how often do you buy freaking flour? I know me and my relatives get a kilo every 2-3 months…Bakeries and pizza bars have flour in sacks, some old from a year ago. They don't open a new batch every morning.

So, majority of people getting infected at the same time, just from one batch of flour, is really pushing towards the impossible. That means EVERYBODY (or a lot of people) had to eat from the same (brand new) batch of flour that same day, which is like total BS.

  3. They might be hinting at infected flour spreading it but it doesn't make sense. All those mentioned instances use baked goods. You know, exposing the fungus to temperatures likely above 300 degrees fahrenheit for over 10 minutes… no way an organism that thrives at human body temp is surviving that.

  4. This is wrong but only true in raw uncooked flower or dough. The fungus cant survive being heated 350-345F in for 15-30 min. My guess it can survive our natural temperature and some increase for infection temperature. That's why our bodies cant fight it with an elevation of temperature. So only the people who touched raw flower and inhaled it, got infected first but not with cooked food. This is why we cook food and cut down on infection problems.

  5. This might be super stupid, but if the fungus couldnt survive a host body if it was too hot…. If you got infected, could you theoretically get into a jacuzzie or a steam room for long enough to kill the fungus in the body?

  6. "There is basis in science for something like this to happen"

No, there isn't. Ants are chemically driven, hive insects with the brains of …ants. People are not. Any large brained animal is way too complex for something like this to evolve.

Global warming is a red herring too. There are places on earth that are scorching hot, year round.

From history, whenever someone has become ill from eating contaminated flour, they are being poisoned by the toxins released from the fungi or mold. After cooking the flour, the mold is killed by the heat, but the toxins remain to poison the victim. Cordyceps is a living thing and while it might survive in flour, it would not survive being cooked, to then infect a host after being eaten. To get infected this way, you would have to eat raw, uncooked, infected flour. Even then, the fungi or mold would probably be killed by your stomach acid. Ergot poisoning is just that, poison. It's not an infection. Your brain does not get taken over by a living parasite.

Further, insects do not possess an equivalent system to the antibody-mediated adaptive immune response of vertebrates. They can become infected by things that cannot infect us …such as Cordyceps.

The science in TLoU is definitely more interesting that the non-science of something like The Walking Dead and adds plausibility to the show, but it's not real and we are not at risk.

  7. Great video. As a French viewer though, little correction on the pronunciation of Nuit d'Apocalypse, you don't pronounce the T at the end of Nuit, otherwise it was ok 😉

  8. 4:10 that Ergot outbreak is a LOT more than just vomiting and diarrhea. Ergot contains LSA and Ergotamine (the precursor to LSD). Ergotism, also known as “Saint Anthony’s Fire”, causes intense hallucinations, delusions, burning sensations in the extremities, and vomiting/diarrhea. Essentially, it’s like having a violently bad acid trip while you feel as if you’ve been set on fire and you’re leaking out both holes.

  9. The fungus wouldn't survive baking, people wouldn't get it from pre-cooked food that had flour in it, only if they did baking at home and were exposed to uncooked flour. So it's good they didn't make pancakes or cookies, but they wouldn't get infected from a birthday cake from a bakery.
Ergotism is not an infection of a person by the fungus, it's the effects of the toxins already created by the fungus when it infected the grain. If the cordyceps in the show was producing toxins in flour that people ate, people might get temporary symptoms but they wouldn't be carrying the live fungus and they couldn't infect other people.

  10. if anyone is interested in more content about this kind of fungus, there is a fun book called cold storage by David Koepp that deals with an aggressive version of it

  11. Don't forget Pedo Pascal was opposed to The Parental rights in education act, because he supports sexually grooming of kids, and the development of debilitating mental disorders.

  12. Its an interesting concept that it could spread thru grains, except there's a massive difference between surviving in a 98.6 degree human body and a 350 degree oven getting baked lol. Fungus would never ever be able to survive that its literally impossible no matter any mutation as there would be no ability to in nature

  13. Its not a coincidence that 10/10 SARS variants come from industrial breed birds – Due to selective breeding and forced antibiotics we have created bird species with lower immune defenses and in combination with overcrowded housing the entire process becomes a breeding ground for dangerous microbiology.
All it takes is for one, just one, of these sars variants to mutate a gene we have no defense against and its byebye.
