The Last of Us CORDYCEPS Myths DEBUNKED By Real Fungus Expert!

The Last of Us Cordyceps Infection Explained! Erik Voss interviews an actual scientist to break down the science of The Last of Us!

In HBO’s The Last of Us, the mutated strain of the Cordyceps fungus infects humanity. How plausible is this science fiction scenario? Erik Voss interviews João Araújo, an expert in the Cordyceps fungus working at the New York Botanical Garden. João separates fact from fiction and debunks the myths viewers may have!

  1. So IF the cordeyceps infection did evolve and be able to infect humans, what's keeping other mammals safe? Why are only humans seemingly a threat? If our higher temperatures were what was keeping us safe, the fungi evolved beyond that, why aren't other warm blooded creatures infected???

  2. I take Cordyceps mushroom powder everyday. It's a performance enhancing fungi. It oxygenates your blood, feeding your muscles. It increases endurance and gives you energy. Fungi is amazing. The first plants on earth were created through a cooperation between algae and fungi.

  3. When dr João said many fungi can infect humans, he did not meant in the zombie style thing.

He said something we all know about, so i don't understand the surprise.

    Candidiasis
    Athletes Foot
    Some types of pneumonia

    "What is mycosis caused by?

Fungal infections, or mycosis, are diseases caused by a fungus (yeast or mold). Fungal infections are most common on your skin or nails, but fungi (plural of fungus) can also cause infections in your mouth, throat, lungs, urinary tract and many other parts of your body."

  4. You should ask if the can manipulate it in a lab and create a fungus that can infect humans that's the problem and it really should make you worry when the WEF wants us to eat bug's instead of food

  5. But what if humans experiment and do gain of function research that speeds up in force the mutation of the cordyceps. Granting them the ability to bypass our immune system ect? With or with out global warming. The cordyceps are then able to infect mammals like humans. 👍🏽 litterally possible.

  6. Naturally yes cordyceps would not be harmful to humans. But then we need consider how they could be altered through biological research or weaponized. Which I think with a decade of research and enough funding could be possible non the less. Giving the game merit if that approach was more taken.

  7. Hello Mr. Mycologist, there are over 300 pathogenic fungi which very common; don't you find it interesting that the two most common scripts are statins and anti-depressants are both derived from anti-fungals? Cordyceps are good for humans, but not for ants! Fungus does not die from not having water! It goes into stasis. Pathogenic fungus has more DNA than humans! The three Great Kingdoms of life are animal, plant and fungus; the last of which parasitizes the first two. Not all is parasitic tho, medicidal mushrooms healthy AND anti-fungal as parasitic fungus attacks them as well!

  8. In comparison to plants and animals fungi are so uniquely beautiful while being comparably foreign and alien to humans. It’s easy to make fungi both terrifying and beautiful. Thanks for the deep dive!

  9. I’d be interested to see his opinion on if naughty scientists decide to do gain of function type research on it would that accelerate the evolution in the lab? How would he contain it? Would a vaccine be possible? Would he trust Firefly to make one?

  10. Its a shame theres no spores in the first series. Years aftrr the collapse the spores would be everywhere. With the time and amount of fungus there would be no clean air left. If the fungus can survive inside the hostile environment of a human body it would grow over the whole world in the ocean on it in the air the ground would be covered and thats that. I never played the game but i liked how the spores were in the air or it looked like it from the oarts i saw in vids.

  11. So watch out for people leaving society and avoiding others not going to work and igniring their family as they may be the first of us to be infected lol. What happens if they start to gather together they dont want to be alone they only want to get go to a good place to spread the fungus and morenof them could protect their gardens so they can spread it in the air. What would such a parasite do if it gained acess to a higher being like himans. Luckily pur bodies are very hostile environments.

  12. How global warming leads to fungi being able to survive in human body temperature and then leads to surviving in 400f in the oven when flour is turned into bread and cookies?

  13. When y'all were discussing flour being a substrate, and he said it would be too dry, he is correct but he didn't mention how the spores can actually live in that flour even though it's dry and go into a dormant phase and they can wait for years if needed but they would stay in that dorm and stay until it interacted with moisture so basically when people would go to use it and they can even survive heat of being baked, and when they have the right moisture level they can use that flour as a food source to start to grow in

  14. They've been experimenting with this fungal concept in humans for decades.

In fact, what they haven't told you, is that with fertilizing growth agents, the fungus/yeast/hyphae grows and becomes MORE radiotrophic.
And with radiotrophic frequencies, they can get bio information from said human participants…..or victims.
Also, variable levels of ELECTRONIC HYPNOSIS can be performed and/or induced. 💯
