I must say, I'm a little surprised at our host's reaction to the gazebo gag here – that's one of the very oldest D&D silly stories I know of. It was already disseminating on the nascent modern Internet when I was searching for homebrew D&D 2nd stuff in the late 90s!
Given that he referred to it as 'greentext', though, maybe he's thinking of a different story.
Edit: he is not, and it is FAR older than he thinks it is. I've seen at least one source date it to the 70s, but the late 80s or early 90s wouldn't surprise me either, given it seemed well-known when I encountered it.
so the moral of the story so far is "do NOT, at any circumstances, allow Hildinrand Manderville to adopt children"
One of the nice things about following Skyen's time in Eorzea is being reminded of things I'd forgotten, like the gazebo.
