The influence of coal prices on energy bills is ‘relatively small’

NSW Mining Chief Executive Stephen Galilee says the influence of coal prices on increased energy bills is “relatively small”.

“There are other factors at play including what the generators themselves are going to charge,” Mr Galilee said.

“It’s a very complicated market – to some extent the last thing we need is more fiddling from politicians in this market given how politically charged it is.”

  1. Sorry, FHs, but you rely on coal for the time being. If you want a viable and cleaner alternative for the time being, support nuclear. Oh wait, you're vaguely aware of one or two incidents over the last 40 years where things were dangerous. Better blanket the country with useless solar panels and rip up the naturally beautiful coastline with massive, useless, expensive windmills.

  2. DO IT THE UK CONSERVATIVE WAY ALBO 😊*The UK government has increased its 25% levy on oil and gas companies – the UK energy profits levy – to 35% from January 2023 as part of its November 17 Autumn statement. The scheme has also been extended by two years to March 2028.17 Nov 2022*

  3. The government created the problem by demonizing coal and gas and lenders where loath to lend money to the power stations for upgrades and replacement machinery then the government started to shut them down early. Even before wind and solar was even producing enough power to cover such shutdowns. Happened here the UK, Germany and even France was shutting down old nuclear plants and not replacing them with nuclear but unreliable wind and solar .

  4. For anybody that hasn't been paying attention, it's natural gas that is the primary cost burden … and increased natural gas demand in our electricity generation is due to the proliferation of wind turbines that funnily enough don't generate power each and every time that a high pressure system passes through. Which happens with monotonous regularity.
