The Hidden Truth about Coal Mining | NACCO Natural Resources

This episode followed Aaron, Angel, Ben, and Matt to three separate locations with the folks over at North American Coal.

Longview, TX Texas
Shreveport, Louisiana
Ackerman, Mississippi

The first location brought them to the Sabine Mine, which was a mine-to-mouth operation that included taking a ride on a Marion 8200, seeing another dragline work on reclamation that had already been mined, and taking coal to the power plant with haul trucks.

The boys got to see Kress Coal Haulers, 785s, PC 2000s, and another machine that we’d love for you guys to guess in the comments.

The second location found them at Five Forks Mine in the middle of “Nowhere Louisiana”. The coal here had a really long life span (a 30-year coal seam). This was a unique situation because the coal here wasn’t as deep as the previous operation they visited.

On this project, NAACO ran a 6020B and Caterpillar 777’s to strip, and then loaded coal onto on-road trucks to take to the plant (which were loaded by smaller excavators – aka 374s.)

The third location they visited was with Mitigation Resources of North America (a NACCO company) at the Red Hills Mine in Mississippi.

At this site, Mitigation Resources said they have to continually make sure there are no net losses of streams or wetlands throughout the process of impact. Meaning… They have to put back streams, plant species back, and if it’s farm property, yield a certain amount of crops each year.

The land here was so beautiful… You’d never ever know it had already been mined. See for yourself by watching the whole vlog!

Astounding Fun Facts To Relish On:

From 1970 to 2019 the gross domestic product of coal increased by 285%
Vehicle miles traveled increased by 195%
The population increased by 60%

YET, the aggregate emissions for 6 common pollutants has dropped by 77%.

  1. Stating what people think about miners generally is a leap of logic…Here in Pennsylvania; miners are very well respected, regardless if they work under or on the soil…

  2. Amazing videos! Only thing I'd love to see would be a tour of some of these power plants where the coal is brought. Try and show people the scrubber systems used, and what they do with the ash. Thanks for all your content and showing how the world lumbers on!

  3. i really like this video but my internal warning lights go on when people from controvertial groups can only talk about the positives of their endevours. A video showing all the fantastic restoration work coal mines do with no mention of the carbon released by disturbing all that coal producing energy for all your households that could be powered by means that do less overal damage to the environment.

  4. Am I the only one that sees that dragline and wants to drive that thing ! well not drive it but operate it ! it looks like a lot of fun 😁👍 yes I already operated equipment so it's not a huge leap for me obviously I already like operating equipment but still that thing looks awesome 😎👍

  5. Would love to see a video like this showing off a smaller aggregate operation. My particular one is ran by a large company, but we're their basement essentially. I work production and maintenance on the plant and fill in as needed. We're lucky to go a week without fighting the plant. We crush roughly 2500 tons a day, but the whole crushing operation is ran with 5 people. 1 loader man, 2 haul truck drivers, and 2 at the plant.

  6. Could you do a video about the danger that the machines (especially the draglines) face after they are no longer needed?

Too many historic machines have been lost especially Big Muskie, The Captain (that was a fire), The Silver Spade, the 2 Bucyrus-Erie 3270s

    The Mountaineer

The Dragline that served as a 9/11 memorial which witnessed the 4th plane crash into a field and was used as a flagpole for a flag

  7. Decimated mountains, polluted waterways, dirty air. And that’s just the mining process. Then there’s the power generation part of it that comes with its own list of environmental impacts

  8. But coal mining can never be ecological! Reclaiming the land is one thing but all the co2 that was trapped in the coal will not be reclaimed. The rest of the western world is moving away from coal because it’s not sustainable and there are alternatives. US is in many ways under developed.

  9. Company I work for installs the electrical equipment, cables, operators chairs and such. We bring the machine to optimum working condition. Been on all the dragline machines in your videos and a lot more. Great videos keep them coming.

  10. It makes me sad to see all the wasted money putting dirt back over coal and planting a bunch of trees like hippies. The first people who discovered oil was by finding oil just bubbling out of the ground as a spring. Are we supposed to clean all the oil and hydrocarbons out of the entire planet because of stupid hippies like al gore?

  11. From coal country I thank you. I have never been part of the industry but I see and hear about what’s going on up in the mines all the time. Appreciate your content.

  12. Love the vids. It'd be helpful for regular joes if you referenced cubic yards when describing machines… this dragline bucket pulls x yards. For the normal dirt monkey the size of these things is astounding. Keep up the good work.

  13. Yeah, they don’t dig into the mountains of West Virginia as much anymore. Instead they just cut the top off the mountain. But that’s hard coal, not the soft lignite you see in Texas. But when they are finished, those mountains look like Texas because they chopped them all down. It’s not a pretty sight.

  14. Education is a good thing. Indoctrination is not so good.
Excellent information on this subject without all the "climate change" b.s.
Yes, the climate is changing. It has been changing since the first day of this planet actually having a climate.

  15. Love the NAACO series and seeing all the mines. My dad has been with NACCO for 30+ years and it has provided an amazing life for me and my brothers! Was blessed to intern at Sabine mine for several years while in college. Many memories from that operation and the amazing people that work there!

  16. I am skeptical of any video produced by NACCO.
Emissions reduced by 70%? Who came up with those numbers? Who peer-reviewed them. Which emissions? Some or all? CO2? SO2? What happens to the toxic fly ash residue?
Coal is killing us, no matter how pretty a propaganda film you make.

  17. It's not the mining process that is so harmful to our planet. it's the burning of the coal. And the cost of coal is no longer the cheapest form of energy, solar is That is why we are switching to 100% renewable energy.

  18. PA Mining did a live Q&A stream a couple weeks ago and he talked about some of this. It's quite interesting what people don't realise and what other refuse to say on the subject.

  19. Again, great video Aaron. I think you
hit the jackpot with dealing with this niche of the Dirt World. Not a lot of people know about the backside of how our world is powered and you bring the information to all of us! Thank you

  20. Never knew Texas had coal. Being mined and taken directly to the power plant is a definite win for the environment and, yes, the company. Cheaper costs and less transportation pollution.

  21. Coal is burnt carbon. The movie Avatar. That location where it happened in real life was earth. When the Mega Titans were alive. They were the Avatar. After their mega giant trees were cut or burnt to the ground. That's when the story Noah happened. All of the water in the sky that was held up by those mega trees came down to earth. Putting the mega tree fires out and killing all of the mega Titans. All pre-planned for coal today. Then many other resources. As in gold mining. Ever wander why they call it an vain of gold. That gold comes from the vains of dead mega Titans. Iron as well. We use resources from the dead. How was this figured out. All started with an flat stone that is an map. From the Rocky Mountains west. An impossible map. Was in an Holy sight. Kept in an small building. In Israel. The Rocky Mountains ect are mega old ming dumping sights. Made the same exact time the Mega Titans were killed. Their bodies are all over. Yet now of stone. Coal mines are mega trees burnt mega years ago. The exact same time the Mega Titans were taken out. The true Avatar.

  22. Here in the US we have EPA Loons compromised by Soros and the CCP, and are destroying our energy infrastructure, we have the ability to use HELE technology and burn Coal at 50% efficiency, and we scrub our emissions, most countries do not.
Meanwhile, China will build NINE HUNDRED NEW COAL PLANTS until 2030 !
    Is this about CO2 ?
    NOPE !
    About Weakening America !

  23. All the love from the UK. Here's a point, I'm old enough to remember the buildings in the "Northern Town" where I live being black because most people had coal burning fires/stoves in their houses. These building have been cleaned and look nice and clean. If you go to wikipedia and look up Sellafield Nuclear site, part of that talks about a clean up(for part of the site) running until 2104. TWO THOUSAND AND ONE OH FOUR, boy oh boy I shudder reading that. Many thanks for this vid.
