When my dad was in middle school, he loved watching birds. On our ranch where he grew up, there was a red tailed hawk with a nest on a nearby cliff. He saw the hawk get struck by a car when it was swooping back up after diving down to catch a mouse. Dad suspected her to have laid eggs and he was able to retrieve them from the nest. He built an incubator and successfully hatched one of the two. A female that he took care of and raised. He could call for her and she'd fly straight to him and land on his arm. She ended up producing many offspring and she taught them all about my dad. I have a picture of him with his arms out with 7 full grown hawks perched on him. He was an awful student but was encouraged to attempt getting a degree. Ten years later he graduated with a doctorate in veterinary medicine and he's now been a veterinarian for 41 years. I live on property he grew up on and there is still a very healthy red tailed hawk population
