the game so good I wrote a college essay about it

When I applied to colleges last year, one school asked me what I’d talk about if I had an audience of millions for ten minutes. I wrote an essay about how I’d talk about this game because I love it so much.
I did not get in.

  1. I actually wrote one of my application essays about Xenoblade 2. It helps that I was applying to a game design program, and I'm focusing on storytelling and worldbuilding, but writing about video games you're passionate about is totally valid.

  2. IM FINALLY BACKKKKKK 🫡
Hope you enjoy the video! If you’ve played three houses, tell me all about your thoughts and experiences with the game!! I hope you guys loved it as much as I did or want to give it a try!

  3. i don't mean to be rude, but three hopes is actually the what if of three houses, not the sequel (though to be honest it might as well be since you'd be kinda lost if you played three hopes without playing three houses)

  4. I remember getting to play smash bros with Faye Mata (Petra’s VA) and Billy Kametz (Ferdinand’s VA) and they were both such cool and friendly people. Absolute tragedy we lost him so young

  5. I was so glad to play Three Houses as a fan of radiant dawn and see that the trend of morally gray, full of depth and powerful women with white hair was alive and well

Micaiah and Edelgard are the absolute best 🤍

  6. But you didn't get an audience of millions even for this video yet… 🙁 I haven't watched it yet but that's still sad. The school suggested that an audience of millions for 10 minutes be part of the scenario! I haven't watched yet but you bet this is going in my to-watch list because I love this game and have FINALLY done all of every route except the final battle of Silver Snow so I don't have to worry about unwanted spoilers… unless you spoil the Silver Snow ending all over this video, LOL.

  7. what ppl who never played FE dont understand is that as far as pasing goes, the gameplay in FE is lightning fast compared to how fights go in most turn based games, plus moving around in a map creates context to distance and a more natural back and forth between the player team and the enemy team than how, lets say, final fantasy usually does with one static team on one side trading blows against a static team on the other side and taking forever for each combat to be resolved, plus the animations in FE are sick. They hear "turn based" and "strategy" and think it's gonna be slow, but it's not, at least as far as each combat goes, some maps are bigger than others, but that's usually a whole chapter of the story

  8. I have almost 400 hours in it its a great game tho after that much and despite being at end game of blue lions madding I have almost no interest in playing it agien but any game that can give you 400 hours on content is a good one and if you haven't done a madding classic run do it its fun either verdent wind or chrismon flower is probably the easiest maddining is a bit tedious but the resounce magement of spells and gambits and threat evaluation or just comeing up witb a warp strat to finsh a map faster is super satisfieing especially if your planning from part 1 for certain builds to pay off later

  9. Fight you? Sure, why not!

All the plot routes are kinda bad.

Claude is such a nothing character, his "schemes gimmick" never does anything relevant and his route is the same as Church's. Worst of all, they do nothing with his lineage, which was the main plot twist of the route.

Edelgard's is the worst. The Route is as stupid as Fates Conquest, plotting against a bad guy while abiding all their orders.
There's only two differences. Corrin was spineless and passive, they did all what they did because the plot made them to; while Edgelord has drive, which is good. However Corrin had a plan to accomplish their objective (contrived and was Azura's but it's something) while the writers forgot that part with Edgelord, so she just steamrolls Rhea (bad) and beats the Agarthans off screen (terrible).
Oh, one more thing, her going to the monastery is stupid, the Agarthans already have spies trying to takedown church members and stealing relics. She's supposed to be important to move the people of Adrestia and letting her go to the monastery risks her getting help from other nations to back stab them. Obviously the monkey whi wrote the script didn't realize this, one way or the other and she's just there, doing grunt work…

Dimitri's is decent, but the way it integrates with the gameplay is dreadfull, which, is a critique on all the routes…

They should've done gameplay scenarios that made feel all routes as different moods (CF changing the world, VW interloping a nation, AG vengeance). All we get is different starting positions in one map, wasted potential.

Another wasted potential is how little units interact with what happens in the routes. There's a famous conversation with Dorothea we're she mourns the death of Ferdinand in the routes he is a boss. This is the only time a character reacts to someone's death and it's because he is the only non optional student to fight.

Meanwhile, the previous Fire Emblem: Echoes, Shadows of Valentia, has post battle quotes mourning deaths, cinematics, an alternate sequence for Mathilda's death if unrecruited and different endings for surviving halves of couples.

Sadly the next entry, Engage, is still quite shallow in this department, but at least characters mourn their dead loved ones if they aren't forced to say context sensitive garble.

Continuing with gameplay, you praised the grindy, something most entries in the franchise avoid and is antithetical to strategy (the main reason for the existence of the franchise). You said you played in lower difficulties, and I can assure you the grind becomes excruciating higher up since it increases the thresholds for rewards. This encourages boring point farming for several hours in solved optional maps. Terrible all around.

Additionally, the unit building is pathetic. Not only most growing options are borderline useless, giving terrible rewards for most classes or rewards you can't use effectively for half the game, but heavily rewards very specific combinations that completely stifle the purpose of such a seemingly complex and open ended system.

    Let me elaborate on this.
Most unit's are rather flavorless. They all can aspire to us become a "player phase bot". Usually, using a Brave Combat Art.
This encourages investing on specific Skills:
+6 damage from Brigand or Mage.
    +20 hit from Archer
Defiant Attack, gender locked male for STR and female for Mag.
    +Str and Dex
    A single Weapon Prowess
Weapon Faire, likely from an advanced class.

There's no space for any other skills and has a very specific path to achieve, only differing on whatever weapon the unit has a special CA, otherwise, just go with bow for Sniper. Worst of all, these units will see close to no use for stats other than Attack and Hit rate, risking close to nothing since easy copouts exist like the impregnable wall and miracle gambits.

And sets that vary, becoming enemy phase units, still only divert at the very end and have such marked advantages, units can have terrible talent for these startegies and still overcome most challenges easily. For example, every female can become a dodge tank, stacking defiant avoid and alert stace and various avoid bonuses, to the point they can safely stay in the middle of the battlefield with close to no threat's since gambit enemies are nigh nonexistent and easily isolated.

Most of the community believes this is some sort of a triumph of sandbox srpgs. I believe they're extremely gullible and can't recognize the faulty system just because there's a lot of Combat Arts. This was enough to gaslight so many people into thinking this is a good game.

Now, music. It's overrated. Subjectively, I only like a couple of tracks: Long Road and The Arena Theme. Otherwise, either they come off as generic or try hard, especially with so many tracks using gibberish choirs.
Objectively, the "combat" version of the tracks mostly sound terrible. They simply add mindless percussion that sounds like someone is bashing pans in the background as an actual competently made song is playing.

Now, the supporting cast. While they're overall good, the general sentiment is they overuse "gimmicks".

The most obvious is Bernadetta, where she always starts her C ranks as a bundle of anxiety regardless of how advanced she is with other characters. This is a clear issue of having so many characters being capable of interacting with so many more. Ultimately, is to much writing, a gargantuan task only achievable by resorting to make similar supports for plenty of scenarios.

Now then, I have a specific gripe with Ingrid. She has conversations where she expresses she wants to become a knight but her father wants her to wed for the benefit of their people. This is similar to Ignatz drive to become a painter, but it's absurd as a conflict for a couple of reasons.

    1) Context, she can literally be a Knight class, fighting for her kingdom and still whine about it. As if she can't realize she is living her dream.

    2) Her role as a royal consort nigh guarantees her combat prowess will be an asset, she will basically be the Knight of whoever she weds, since she's expendable once she births an offspring with a Crest. Historically, all members of royalty had to be capable of abiding their monarch's wishes, this includes murder. Perfect for a Knight.

    3) Even if the former isn't the case, this is Fire Emblem, royalty constantly fight. Bandits, other countries, it's extremely common, especially for lesser royalty, such as most of FE's protagonists. Pretty much only senescence prohibits someone to fight in this franchise.

Therefore, her dreams don't conflict with marrying. Much unlike Ignatz dream of becoming a painter and having to live as a Warrior.

To me, this is a failure for not wanting to give her the edge of her liking the war, the only moment she can completely disobey her father and live how she wants. This could've been a unique character trait, someone that's otherwise a good person but is enjoying the fact a massive war is causing widespread suffering. Could've been an interesting character dealing with guilt and apathy, but no, her conflict is completely external and boring.

Finally, this lack of "edge" is shown all over the place in this game and the evidence is the Agarthans. They're the cause of everything bad that happens in the game. They killed Rhea's, Dimitri's and Edgelord's Families, created the creasts of which the lizards retaliated in kind and they're behind all the bad things the Empire does.

This causes all the conflicts to have an obvious solution, which is eliminating them, and in kind, makes every other character seem like idiots for not realizing they have this enemy in common.

Additionally, they lessen how impactful are the protagonists actions. They're all pushed to kill each other and do horrible things all because of them… Such a disappointing contrivance.

So yeah, the only good thing about this game is that I spent 40 dollars instead of 60!

  10. I wrote my main college essay on Berserk, my favorite manga of all time, and how it helped me learn to accept the help of friends, grow as a person, and persevere in the face of challenges.
And I wrote a supplemental on Three Houses, my favorite game of all time, and how it taught me to be more open minded, accepting of other’s opinions, and strong enough to determine my own beliefs.

And guess who’s going to Vanderbilt in a month
If you’re going through the college process, don;t be afraid to show who you truly are. Show what truly matters to you and what helped you become who you are-especially if it’s a powerful experience, or a friend or story. You got this guys!

  11. Thoughts on any of the other FE games? I personally cut my teeth on the 3DS entries when I was in college. Been interested in playing Engage at some point, but the mixed reception (especially regarding its story) has kept it on the backburner for the time being. Besides, I still need to finish some of the 3H routes, though my personal allegiance will probably remain with the Golden Deer 🫡

  12. Three Houses was my third Fire Emblem game (Started with Sacred Stones on GBA, then Shadow Dragon DS) and I was pulled in instantly by the story. The GBA/GC/Wii games are ruthless, and are super tough, but have great stories. I felt like Three Houses took what people liked about Awakening and Fates, and turned in into the ideal FE starter game. While I dislike how the game handles classes compared to any other FE game, I really loved choosing whatever path I wanted for each unit. (Also Black Eagles was my first route, accidentally completed the requirements to join Edelgard) As an "old guard" FE fan, I'm super glad Three Houses brought so many new fans to the franchise, as these are amazing games. (Except your average FE Twitter user, none of us like them)

  13. I also picked the black eagles for my first playthrough and I remember how shocked I was during the Edelgard plot twist heck I’m still shocked about it to this day. I also wanted to say this video made me remember why I loved this game so much keep up the great work

  14. I LOVE this game, probably a little more than I should 😭. Everything about it is amazing. It was the first JRPG I ever played back in middle school and going in blind with Blue Lions was the most fun I’ve ever had with a game. I hadn’t really played any games quite like this at the time (I played mostly games like Mario and Zelda) and it brought me to a whole new Genre which I now love and encouraged me to play series like Xenoblade, Yakuza and Persona! But yeah, this game is one of the greatest Nintendo titles, no debate. The characters, music, gameplay and ESPECIALLY story, are all top tier. Just the scene of meeting Dimitri post timeskip alone just manages to get so much emotion out of me. I don’t think it will get out of my top 3 games of all time along with Persona 4 and Xenoblade 1. 🙏

  15. I will not stand for chess slander!

Nah, it's ok. Haven't played this game in years but I remember I had a great time, just not enough to play a different path because those first 10 or so days are the same. I picked Black Eagles->side with Edelgard route of course.

  16. Can't believe it's already been 5 years. Definitely can see it as a classic up there with other JRPG's like Chrono Trigger, FF7, Paper Mario 1/2. Might be my favorite Fire Emblem (tough between Path of Radiance). Sorry you didn't get in. I would appreciate an essay like that as a gamer, but would reject in favor of something outlining maturity and responsibility 😛

  18. Oh man 3h is like my 3rd or 4th favorite game. Such a good game. My favorite is Azure Moon but imo no route is bad. Rhea Claude Edelgard Dimitri… theyre all such amazing characters! I think the characters are my favorite part. What a game… honestly I want another fodlan game. Maybe one more about Rhea during her initial war? But I'll take nearly anything. I love this world so much ❤
