The bombing war in Europe comes to an end in a fury of fire and destruction. Spartacus takes stock of the human toll of this campaign and assesses the near futility of it all. On the other side of the globe, the USAAF ratchets up the firebombing of Japan further still. Countless more civilian lives will be cut short.

What a wonderful commentator you are sir.
Sparty's quotes at the end of these video's are some of my favorite parts about this entire series. I hope he keeps them up a little longer.
Weird penultimate comment about the bombing being ineffective meanwhile discussing the firebombing of Tokyo, you state it cut production by 50%. I mean it may have been ineffective in crushing morale as Harris had wanted, it’s hard to argue it was ineffective against material production and yes, I know, that fighter production in Germany increased during the the bombing, my response is, how much more production could have been without the bombing
Roland Friesler of the People's Court. Not to be confused with Judge Wapner of the People's Court, though they sorta looked alike.
Το have such leaders, so indeferrent to the plight of their citizens, that knowing that all is lost continue to fight on, bringing more misery to their people. Oh blessed were the axis indeed. Thank you for the video. Great work as always
Im saddened to see the bloodlust of the so called "good guys"
"War isnt hell, war is war, hell is hell, and of the two, war is a lot worse"~Hawkeye M*A*S*H*
23:40 – The passionate denunciation of the Allied bombing campaign fails to mention two key consequences forced on Germany. First, the diversion of aircraft and anti-aircraft artillery from ground combat, particularly on the Eastern Front. Second, the diversion of scientific endeavour and related resources. The lives of untold allied and Soviet soldiers were thus saved. The war's end was thus hastened and civilian lives accordingly saved. The imperative to find countermeasures to the bombing disrupted research including that directed to the Nazi's embryonic nuclear pile.
War is horrible, each major war worse than the preceding. Will those who lead nations never learn?
The bombings saved allied lives. In 1945, my grandfather was fighting against the Germans, and I am grateful he survived. Every bomb helped him live through the war. The Germans regretted starting the war and paid for making my grandfather a soldier. I am proud of my grandfather and every allied crew member who helped my grandfather survive.

Hi Time Ghost,
Maybe it was spottted by another viewer before but there is a little mistake in this episode. The photo of General Arnold is the one from William Arnold (23rd Infantry Division) and not the one from Henry Arnold (US Air Force).
Otherwise, thank you for the high quality of every single episodes. Take care.
It should be noted that Japan sneak-attacked the USA and started the USA/Japan fighting in the Pacific.. The USA responded after the attack of course.
The generation that actually fought in this conflict saw it as a battle for survival – not of their making but from evil dictatorships – they had seen their cities bombed mercilessly night after night – they demanded retribution and the air forces of the democracies carried it out to try and stop the evil as quickly as possible – it is very easy to look at those times with modern eyes!
The picture of Hap Arnold that was shown twice doesn't look like any view that I ever saw of Hap Arnold.
Thank you for mentioning the bombing of Pforzheim i never heard of it. Never forget.sparty is doing a amazing job with respect and full duty to this horrible topics
So, we should weep for the people who in 1933, overwhelming elected Adolph Hitler. What about the 17 million civilian Russians who perished in the Blitzkrieg and the 10 million Soviet soldiers? What about the 6 million Jews and the 2 million other who died in concentration camps and jails? The German people supported all these deaths until 1943 when their armies started to lose. They supported the terror raids on Rotterdam, Coventry & London. These people by supporting the Nazis in 1933, started the bloodbath and now you want us to feel sorry AND guilty for what happened to them in defeat? You sir, are clearly educated beyond your intelligence and a complete ass.
The negative response from the public should be explored more (if Homefront series comes back it might be relevant). The war hawks never stopped the same argument that any opposition to a military action is "anti-patriotic". Whether it was for actions to be later taken in the Korean or Vietnam wars, or more recently in bombings of Baghdad or Gaza today. The real challenge of humanity, I find, is being able to recognize acts as atrocious independently of who the enemy is or what the purpose is. Even if the strategic bombings were effective militarily the stories from Tokyo and Dresden should haunt us and remind us the lengths war can go. Otherwise, we may find ourselves winning the war against the enemy yet still losing the war against humanity.
Wow
Comment for the algo, lest we forget
Yet another eye-opening episode… Thank you Sparty and crew for your research and War Against Humanity sub series
didn't quite get the point of that speech at the end. You're saying we should do now to the muslims what should have been done to the nazis in the early 30s to awoid even higher casualties later?
Its actually fairly silly to complain sbout inhumane acts by American pilots and warriors after the facts about life in Japanese prison camps have been known since the war ended , or shortly afterward. Several Senior Japanese Officers were either hung by the neck or shoy by firing squads after their convictions in the War Crimes trials held in the years following that war.
The list of misdeeds is long and apalling ; persons being beheaded who werent even military personnel to begin with. The pot shouldnt be calling the kettle black.
The more I learn about people like Arthur "Bomber" Harris and Curtis LeMay, the sicker I get. They considered these massacres a "success."
Great coverage, Sparty, as always. You're a pleasure to watch, and you make subject matter like this tolerable, at least. ❤
Are there any connection between the nazi terrorbombning and the allied bombings? The nazi terror bombings of civilians in occupied areas have no millitary value but continue also after Dresden.
I love your outros! This episodes always make me thing more about the scale of cruelty in WW2
beautiful words at the end, thank you for all of it
I have a "friend"… an 86-year-old man of German origin, his father arrived in South America in the early 1910s on a nitrate clipper and fell in love with a woman from a port city.
This 86-year-old man has loved airplanes all his life, and like a true artist, he makes scale models of all kinds of aircraft from WW2 and the Cold War, both in wood and modern model kits.
But he has never built an English bomber.
He says that he has never been able to find any beauty in them.
Both of his uncles died in Dresden, they died of asphyxiation, the bodies were found outside a bomb shelter.
All the aircrews that participated in these bombing raids are war criminals, and the same can be said for the officers that ordered them.
It is slightly heartening to hear at 5:08: "It was the deadliest air raid against the German Capital" rather than "it was the deadliest air raid SO FAR …"
"the laws of war"
they don't exist.
in a system that prizes possessions over people.
the only laws that exist protect property.
never forget.
never again.
At the time of these bombings did the Axis powers think of Auschwitz and Nanking?
Never forget.
Never forget the victims of Holocaust, the resistance fighters, the POWs, the conscripts, the civilians young and old, and countless others. All dead due to political leaders jockeying for power and influence globally and locally.
Never. Forget.
