Have done both, really depends on the project, sometimes you just need to code it alone, because you have an idea or design and it would take too much effort to communicate it to others and then plan a build that divides up the labour etc.
But also sometimes for some projects, division of the code base is very amenable and so for those kinds of code bases a team will always be faster.
