My guest this week is none other than Mario Duplantier of French metal titans GOJIRA. One of my favourite bands and drummers of all time, he spilled insane and humble knowledge about everything it takes to get to his level as a musician. We caught up before their INSANE show in support of their latest album Fortitude to talk about everything from drums and practicing to jamming with James Hetfield and stage fright. It was an inspirational chat and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Is it OK that I'm not a drummer but I'm so excited to listen to this guys?
Inspiring! Thanks Crack… I mean Craig.
Just saw them live in Lyon, Mario is a freaking BEAST. Gojira is the best band to see live in the world right now, no doubt about that!
Saw Gojira on this run. It was so worth the wait. Great episode.
Thanks for this podcast, mario is such an insipration
Awesome poddy, made a fan thanks for interviewing the GOAT!
10:24 “All The Tears” is for the hardest Gojira song on drums and it such a amazing song
This reminded me of Matt Heafy of Trivium, he’s also very strict about his exercise and guitar playing. They play the whole show as a warm up before the actual show.
I’m not a drummer or know anything about drums but this was really interesting! Gojira where awesome in London
This was such a treat. Mario is such a cool guy
Does he know the band Kriegsmachine? they have an amazing drummer, i think its one of my favorite
Best podcast ever 👏 🤘
….and justice for Lars! 😆
Mário its such a cool guy really humble I wish I could go out for dinner with him and hangout and maybe get a bit drunk 🙏
Im not a drummer and i dont know anything about drums but this interview is so cool
Mario sounds so Canadian when he says "Oh yeah!"
Art of dying is so fucking good. I love that he still finds it so hard
25 seconds and dude still fucking talks to himself about his name in the most boring way. Wtf is this crap. Next time put an ad there, at least there's a chance it might be interesting
Thanks!
Mario's such a nice dude. Great episode man, hope to eventually see Danny Walker in one episode 🙂
your intros are awful. you only joke about people skipping them so you can put less effort into them.
You can tell the Duplantier's have good hearts
I remember see godzilla in zugarramurudy in 1998…and Empalot un bayonet in 1999 good memories
So many times this was the best interview.
My favorite drummer from my favorite band. This will maybe be the first podcast i will ever listen to from start to finish
What a guy man!! 🤯👌 Top shelf quality person no doubt! Loved the questions you asked and how you guys got along, was really cool man! 🤜🤛
Mario is a beast!! And Lars is my all time favorite drummer .. I'm glad that this was a good talk about Lars 🥁!! He needs justice because he is a phenomenal drummer still 🥁!!
I'm so saddened by the lack of love for old Gojira from the fans.
I just got his signature drumsticks and really like them.
Fuck yes
The first time I listened to gojira I didn't get it. The vocals and blast beats reminded me of the death metal I didn't like. But then it clicked. Because I'm a stubborn music listener. Now gojira is among my favorite bands. I've seen them now live a few times and they are excellent. Seen them in a 3000 seat club. Best concert ever because they sang adoration for none live with Randy on vocals in Richmond VA.
This was such a good podcast. I could listen to Mario talking for hours.
I caught his drumstick at the Lyon gig a week ago, I have a relic of the metronome god himself !
Im surprised you didnt mention Testament when going over the festival bands at the end, they're OG.
Nicest band I've ever met.
This is one of those podcasts you can hear over and over and over again.. So amazing drummer and same as a person, we love you Mario thank you for being a big influence for me
Great interview!!!! Super Mario is the best
Seen them twice so far. Moshing is exhausting lol. What band does Mario mention at 20:45 ? (Referencing all the breakdowns in their songs)
THE GOAT!!!
A genuinely foolish take.
Full of coping and excuses.
" It's not about his drumming" is not a very good defensive someone who's a drummer.
I genuinely consider Lars Ulrich the worst professional musician that I can think of.
Only second to Daron Malakian's live playing when he was SUPER on drugs
(Yes this is absolutely what the entire conversation was about I'm not picking a specific moment to harp on. Not at ALL!)
Got tickets to see Gojira in August with Mastodon and Lorna Shore in Portland Maine. Wish I could tell them Dimillos best seafood anywhere. Those Maine Lobsters 🦞
I love the Duplantier boys. Mario is a master. Can’t wait to see them in April
Such an inspiration, very human person, even if I'm not a drummer, I'll never stop to try to slap that The Art of Dying intro with my hands, trying to coordinate it with my feets…
The man is like a shaolin monk. Huge respect for the war machine that Mario is . I have to say as a long ass time fan , i miss the heavily "Morbid Angel" influenced GOJIRA of old . Last time I saw them (Manchester UK) i didn't feel the raw power i had experienced prweviously (seen them 8 times now) and i miss the technical death metal Gojira . Anyway , who cares what i think ? They finally have the recognition they always deserved and Mario is a living legend . Allez les petits gars , on continue d'assurer et de representer le metal francais . Peace
I'd like to translate the video in french, how can we do that ?
To be honest first time i had listen this guitar sound (Pick Scrape) it was in '92 on a Neurosis track called the web. 😉
This was an awesome watch. Going to be seeing Gojira in Austin in April, plan on catching you guys at Welcome to Rockville in May in Daytona which will be my first music festival, and I also have tickets for Metallica in Arlington, TX for August. Great shows coming up.
Mario is a fantastic drummer.
This man is the reason I got a Zildjian Mega Bell Ride, I love that cymbal
