  1. Don'ts:
DON'T GO TO DOLPHINARIUMS, DON'T SUPPORT ANIMAL ABUSE. Better go diving or snorkeling to appreciate wildlife as it should be, you may even be lucky and see wild dolphins.

  2. As a local born and raised in the island I was looking for flaws in your pov of our island but let me tell you, you are spot on with the recommendations! Even more so with the scams coming from playa

  3. Double check taxi fare with the actual driver at the cruise port. Don’t take the person who is canvassing passengers for the taxi lineup’s word for it. Had a price from a lady at the stand, another passenger came along and took that cab as we Comte, plates it. Then decided to go for it but another driver had stepped up to the platform and once in his car he upped the price! But I was ok with it, he just ensured his tip as he didn’t get one from me at the destination. On the way back the taxi driver gave me a price which he adhered to and when we arrived back at the port he did get a tip! Just remember to double check the price of anything.

  4. The taxi driver ripped me off 100usd for a 5hours tour, it was a scam, we didn’t go many places, he said the coconut will cost 7usd in restaurant, he brought us to his house and cut the coconut from his back yard, it tasted sour, then we went to a maya park, 11usd for the ticket but they want us pay separately, we payed $6at the first entrance, just stores and a maya princess(25usd for photo), then we payed another 5usd for the park, which is ridiculous! At the end, he said he will bring us to a best restaurant for a seafood lunch with “free beach”, the lunch costs 125usd+15%tips. Never back again, the people on the island just want US money

  5. "Rent an electric bike or scooter." I almost turned the video off right there. You're taking your life into your hands doing that. You'll get killed with the crazy drivers there. No thanks. Rent a car or take a taxi.

  6. On our last trip to Cozumel, we rented a scooter and drove the southern loop. It was a great time. Almost no traffic and we stopped at every sea-side shack along the way (over 12). It does have its risks but we will do it again next year. Get away from the cruise port areas and Cozumel becomes a wonderful place to explore.

  7. My dance friends and me are planning on a Cozumel adventure. My general idea is an all inclusive, dance at day clubs in town and retreat to safety at the resort at night. Air bnb and a rental car sounds like an excellent alternative.

  8. As a lone female, I was targeted by a waiter in a restaurant called CHILE TEQUILA on the waterfront. I started going there after dark to listen to the band. I was having a beer, when I noticed the flashing lights of the police behind my car with Texas license plates. My waiter went to my car as the police were removing the license plates. The waiter said a couple of sentences to the police and then put the plates back on. When we got back to my table, he insisted that I owned him $100 US. I was reluctant to do this, I was extorted 2,000 pesos. His accomplice stood and ran my credit card through. The next day I took a male Texas friend with me to the owner, who just laughed at me. My landlord is a taxi driver and told me the owner is connected with some bad people that he pays to protect him. Then I found out from a Texas friend who just moved down here as I did that a friend of hers get scammed out of $500 US for a $50 bottle of tequila by the same restaurant. After I couldn't get anything done I filed a complaint at the tourist police. A lot of the police here are bad as well. Beware of CHILE TEQUILA.

  9. Beware of the Police in Cozumel. Driving after dark is an invitation for be pulled over and shook down. Also, Entrapment by police is legal & frequent in this area. Someone solicits you to buy marijuana and immediately plain clothed police arrest you.

  10. Went to Cozumel June 22 and loved it. Ciello beach is gorgeous, if you can stay on the water with a "pier" scuba companies will pick you up with their boat making for an awesome experience (we used Dive with Martin who were fantastic), Buchannos is well worth the trip if you enjoy a great meal on the pricier side for the island. Pay with pesos when possible particularly with taxis since the rate is fixed, but their conversion rate is terrible, if not outright theft, if you pay with US dollars. If you get an AirBnB make sure to hit the local supermarket. Prices are great and plenty of variety.

  11. I am glad we didn't rent the scooters in cozumel, the way people drive there is kinda wild and we saw a few accidents on the scooters- you are more protected in a car.

Also, get a rashguard instead of those sunscreens. They are still not great for the reef, so just cover your body. One tour I was on even wouldn't let you use ANY sunscreen including so called "reef safe", I was prepared with rashguard and thin scuba pants but others got BURNT.

  12. I'm a female going to Cozumel with my mother and two young children. We will be with Royal Carribean. My mom is pretty nervous about safety. I did read about Cartels being in Cozumel and Playa and for tourists to be aware. We will be doing the Xenses excursion in Playa. I guess what I'm asking is, is it safe where we will be? Two women and two children? I'm trying to ease my mom's fears, but seeing her nervous is making me nervous. What are your thoughts?

  13. We just got back from spending a week there. Not once did I feel threatened or worried. And the locals that I interacted with, were incredibly friendly and helpful. Will go again.they do drive like their nuts though.
