In 1820, a group of radical revolutionaries plotted to overthrow the British government.
Their plan? To assassinate the entire Cabinet whilst at a dinner and spark a nationwide uprising.
It was bold. It was desperate. And it was doomed.
This is the story of the Cato Street Conspiracyโa tale of revolution, betrayal, and tragedy in the heart of Georgian London.

My name is Chris Green and I love to share stories from British history. Not just because they are interesting but because, good or bad, they have shaped the world we live in today.
History should not be stuffy or a long list of dates or kings & queens.
So rather than lectures or Youtube animations, I tell stories that bring the past to life.
My aim is to be chat as if I were having a coffee or meal with you. Jean in Maryland, USA recently wrote: โChris, is the history teacher I wish I had at school!โ
Just for the record, I do have a history degree in Medieval & Modern history from the University of Birmingham.

โ i like that you refrained from making the obvious comparison with ecco chambers today!
Why did they believe the country would be galvanised? I know "the anarchists" were blamed for evrything from bad weather to the firstworld war and were the favoured manufactured monster for the government and its owners of the time, but for these failing middle class conspiritors they must have had some communication with like minded people in other parts of the country?
Is there any record of correspondence or association that we can see?
The idea that a revolution would take place may have changed, but the conditions that would cause one haven't.
as it's always been , the rulers hate the ordinary people for some reason .then they make a circus where we vote as an entertainment
Said it for a long time now, this country needs a revolution to re-set this country that many died for, but who would die for this awful country of today?….
Absolutely fantastic, as per your usual wonderful tales from history. I've long believed that Britain should have had a revolution like the French, to clean out the 'Aristos' – funny how that same gang still pretty well have all of the wealth in the country, along with the influence and power!!
This looks like the way Britain is now going . The Working Class and lower middle class are fed up with being bullied and intimidated , especially in England . Who said the British would never stage a Revolution against its ruling classes , like so many other countries have in history . . Never say Never .
Very interesting video, thank you very much. The Cato Street Conspiracy is familiar to me. The first half of the 19th century, after the end of the wars in Europe, was clearly a febrile time, with horrifying poverty, desperation and anger; after all, the 1840s aren't known as the 'hungry forties'' for nothing…!
Excellent Chris
This is not just a brilliant re-telling of British history…Its something of a cautionary tale, and a message for the World of today in general…As history fans,we shouldn't comment on recent events, perhaps – but last time I went to London, I just so happened to stay close to Edgeware Rd… As a Swede, I still feel some remorse for the actions of one Karl Johann von Kรถnigsmarck, who allegedly conspired to kill Thomas Thynne while being an official diplomat posted in London…Now, that was in 1682, and those Kรถnigsmarcks were half-danish, half-germans and all over the place – remember Otto Wilhelm Kรถnigsmarck who got infamous for blowing up the Parthenon…These days, a certain Greta, name of Thunberg – who never even was a real Thunberg in the first place, having shamelessly stolen the name of Carl Peter Thunberg, famous naturalist in the 18th century, goes to Georgia, just for "wokeness" sake…What did the people of Georgia, the Caucasus Mountains (not Georgia, US of A…) ever do wrong..?.Don't they have enough problems with Abchasia, South Ossetia and certain parliamentary elections already..?? So there we go…And soon, it is time for Yule, Nรถel, Weinachten, Channuka, Kwanza or even X-mas, which has nothing to do with Christianity, as far as I can grasp it. Remember the Mithraeon in London !
An interesting look at a rather forgotten piece of our history. Twelve years later the 1832 Reform Act, also known as the Representation of the People Act, would be a significant step in the process of electoral reform in the United Kingdom but many people were still left in the political wilderness. And in 1834 six Dorsetshire agricultural labourers who became known as the Tolpuddle Martyrs were arrested, tried, then sentenced to transportation to Australia for forming a trade union: something that wasnโt actually illegal at that time. The latter event is also now nearly completely forgotten too.
In an age of hardship inequality and repression!๐ค
Have you done anything about Admiral Thomas Cochrane, 10th Earl of Dundonald and, in 1810, his rather forceful intended defense of the MP Sir Francis Burdett's London house ?
Carronade, boarding pikes, grenades, and kegs of gunpowder. Very worthy of a video.
Chris, was is your view of the Cato St Gang?
I'm not so sure the idea of a violent revolution seems alien to many in Britain today, especially after the flooding of illegal aliens and the sticking many Brits in prison for simply voicing their rage at little girls being murdered and the endless violence from one particular group. Also placing illegal migrants into flash hotels, given free health care, money, phones while native Brits are on the streets. Looking from outside britain looks ready to explode, the native peoples are being treated terribly by the government led by 2 tier Kier
Wow! Same kind of crap our FBI often pulls over here in America to this day! Fomenting crimes!
Very interesting subject matter. I wasn't aware of this conspiracy.
great bit of history, i never knew, thanks .
Britain is more ready for some form of revolution, than it has been for 150 years.
Love the fact the building is still there in Cato street.
Not to be wished for, but with the current 'government' only having been voted for by 20% of the electorate and yet forcing its awful nation-destroying policies on us all, I'll wager they are on the constant alert for conspiracy against them…
Why is this history and not current affairs?
Anyone that knows history and uses it as a gauge for current time should be able to see empires in decline America China and England have all overstepped there boundaries against the common people they have been relying on divisive tactics turning the people against each other along the lines of race religion and political party but this can only last so long before people wake up and see that the real division is rich and poor the rich have been playing by a different set of rules where they can count on money to make them above the law and this is historically when civilizations are in decline the empire is crumbling and people are disillusioned they have taken away our privacy our freedom to determine what is best for us and stolen our lives and our children's lives locking more and more of us up for nonviolent morality based laws that they themselves do not adhere to so the end is nigh and it's too late to stop at this point even if the elite were willing to make the necessary concessions which. They would never do anyway I am not as saying this because it is what I want I can see the writing on the wall from studying the civilizations that have risen and fallen before us I hope I'm wrong
Fascinating story and something I didn't know about. Thanks
Why was this recommended to my YouTube feed? ๐ค
1/ it wasn't a revolution 2/ it most certainly is NOT forgotten
Truheroes
Oh for the good old days…
Ahhh!! Amazing video as always, I hope you would do castlereagh-canningโs duel soon!!
You forgot to mention the year without summer caused by the volcanic eruption of mt Tambora in 1815 that caused 8 years of bad weather caused crop failures
You think the situation of the poor has improved? Lol ๐
Looks like the same inequalities are about today as there where then !
Interesting history. Thank you for posting.
The land elite are still in power. Lol. Still getting away with it, and now the billionaires own all the media social, print and tv.
I must admit that as a Pole I find this intriguing. So Brittain had it's share in world of conspiracies of the 19th century. Kinda feel sorry for the conspirators… they had good reasons to plot and execute the plan, but failed miserably being amateurs.
Even defended by its moat, by the dawn of 20th century English political culture had advanced no more than its continental peers had. The cost of status quo? Its plain to see what was saved, but would it be better to ask what might have been?
Fascinating story. I lived in London for three years and worked at Grosvenor Square. Never heard about Cato Street event. Thank you for the education.
You should do a video on the Walsall anarchists
extreme wealth inequality. Lack of real democracy. All the political power held by a small number of extremely rich people who misuse that power to protect themselves and their wealth. Failing economy leaving most struggling. Violent suppression of public protests with deadly force. A network of secret police thwarting all moves for change.
Sounds a lot like modern day Russia doesn't it. How many people here right now would morn if Putin and his entire government was killed in a raid by idealistic revolutionaries? If you wouldn't condemn the assassination of Putin's government, you shouldn't condemn these men. The UK has changed for the better, but it took over a century. And people in the 1820s couldn't know that would happen. Back then it was a brutally oppressive, expansionist imperialist oligarchy which was terrible to live in for 90% of the population and crushed anyone who tried to make it better. Worth remembering when you get misty eyed with patriotism
Even if they had managed to pull of the assassinations the army/navy would be loyal to the King who would defeat and arrest them all and then new people that were cut from the same cloth as the old ones would replace them.
The lesson is: always watch out for the government agent in your group.
We have a Cato St., here in Stanger, KZN, S. Africa, I wonder if there is any connection with the UK event?
Freedom for Tooting! – Wolfie Smith. The struggle of the orders has been raging for millennia from ancient times to this day.
P.S. Now most people have the vote, the powers that be found ways to make certain they still dominate.
It's proven in political outcomes studies in the USA, but similar would apply in the UK. The billionaires and the like almost always get what they want from politics. The working class does not, i.e., most of the general population do not.
What billionaires want from politics is usually very different from what the working class wants.
It's almost like democracy is a fig leaf for plutocracy.
Democracy means the common class of citizens hold power, i.e., the working class (demos means the common class and kratis means to hold power, so therefore democracy).
I mean working class in the sense of being employed on wages, salary, or contract to work for somebody else producing goods and services, etc. The employer aims to capitalize on that labour. Working class is what most people are and it does not necessarily mean you are poor. It's a different way of understanding class compared to the former lower, middle and upper classes. It's based on your relationship to the economy and function in it.
What do I think? I think it is another great story, wonderfully told, and as you say, a rarely mentioned or known story. I just love the enthusiasm and energy Chris. Now, if only you were open to dinner or going down the pub for a few, you would be such a wonderful person to talk with โฆ for hours ๐ฎ Just love them all Chris. Please keep them coming โค

Imagine UK without the monarchy. Glad the revolution had failed.
Starmers master plan
A revolution is underway
Thank you for a nicely-detailed story. How did the Coldstream guards receive orders while waiting elsewhere?
