I watched gore as a form of mental self harm in the past. Self inflicted traumas that will never go away.
I kinda get it, its like sfx muas (makeup artists xd) use real injuries to get them straight when doing the makeup. I myself as an artist sometimes use some pictures to do some certain details but, when i have the idea of a more "explicit" painting i just roll with whatever my brain has to offer rather than go to the rabbithole of internet gore.

Good practice is to use multiple photos as references for gory sprites and models. I come from a generation of edgelords so I'm not all that bothered by gruesome imagery. One time, I explored an abandoned motel and I found a dead woman's corpse bundled up in an area rug and I wasn't bothered by it at all but my wife at that time had to see a therapist after she saw it. I didn't realize it affected other people that badly.
