USS Colorado was an American battleship commissioned in 1923. She was the lead ship of the Colorado-class and served throughout the interwar period and World War II. During her time, she would absorb many hits from shore batteries and kamikaze attacks, but she always carried out her duties despite the damage.

  1. Very good video. Lots of good information. I suggest that, for names of Pacific islands with which you are not familiar, you check them. For instance, it is not Heh-brides, it is Heh-brid=eez, short I, and accent on the first syllable. There are a couple of other instances. Other than that an excellent video.

  2. Can you talk about the HMS Belfast? And if you can find information do you also think you could talk about any danish warships? The ones i think will be easiest to find information about would be MS-8 and frigatte 353 Peder Skram.

  3. The Colorados were the best of the first-generation 16" gun battleships. Far better balanced than the Nagatos or the Nelsons. The Nelsons may have had more powerful guns, but at least the Colorados could fire their main guns without rendering half the ship uninhabitable, allowing them to remain on station for months at a time with resupply whereas the Nelsons were limited to a few weeks at most before they had to return to repair self-inflicted damage. The Colorados could be deployed at long distances and remain on station, whereas the Nelsons were effectively forced to be used within a few sailing days from Britain.

  4. Armored portions of a USN BB weren't going to be much damaged by a 150 mm (5.9") shell. Her ability to fire her 16"/45s and 5"/51s would not have been much affected, nor would her propulsion. Hits to the superstructure would kill/injure people and damage equipment, which is what happened. WRT the Colorados, Nelsol/Rodnol (😃), and the Nagato class, the respective performances of their guns were quite similar in terms of hitting energy. Hitting early, often, and and in important places would matter far more.

  5. All the USN "standard" battleships were tough ships. Of those that sank: USS Oklahoma was hit by multiple torpedoes of greater explosive power than what she had been designed for, at least one in an area where the torpedo defense system had already absorbed a hit, with the subsequent torpedo hitting the actual hull; USS Arizona, like other USN battleships of the time, was armored against her own guns, 14"/45; the "bomb" that hit her was a converted 16.1" shell, at the worst possible angle for her deck armor; USS Nevada's watertight doors and other seals were missing or worn out; USS California's watertight doors throughout the ship were open to permit an inspection; USS West Virginia was hit by some 7 torpedoes. Only Oklahoma and Arizona were not raised and rebuilt/repaired to fight again, and none were sunk after the Pearl Harbor attack.
