May 1864 signaled the epic clash between Union General Ulysses S. Grant and Confederate General Robert E. Lee. The Battle of the Wilderness would be their first clash in a series of battles as Grant pushed toward the capitol of the Confederacy, Richmond. This episode shows A. P. Hill engages Winfield Scott Hancock on the Orange Plank Road.

First ! Been waiting for this doc!
Thanks again sir 👍
How terrifying!
I really enjoy the animated battle maps!
The animated battle maps make the battles so much more clear & understandable. The battles were so horrific that I'm surprised any of the soldiers had any sanity left. Thank you for these videos that allow me a better understanding of the troop movements.
This is exciting. About time the crucial Battle of the Wilderness got its due!
Literally there’s like a portion of one brigade and a regiment of another there — and somehow Mott’s division is sent back in a domino effect? How?
I love the old Vermont brigade
A well presented recounting of the battle with major flaw (IMO)… I kept wishing image would zoom out a little so we could see all the combatants. Did get big picture til the last seven seconds!
Fighting in these woods and not knowing who and what is around you, puts a whole different spin on these battles.
Cooke as in Philip St. George Cooke? One his sons?
It was surely quite a firefight in the woods and a hellish situation. As it was said: A.P. Hill's defensive battle in the Wilderness was one of the best fights of his career. In fact, it was at Second Bull Run that he proved himself a solid defensive fighter fending off attacks from multiple Union brigades. The Wilderness was Hill's first successful fight as a corps commander. Poor Hancock had his hands full in this battle, and it was when he was still suffering from his Gettysburg wound which hadn't completely healed. Learning a lot from these videos, until the next one.
That didn't look fun.
