Thanksgiving Feast with Apollo the Talking Parrot

We got a bunch of fruits, veggies, and some fish to celebrate with Apollo and his sisters. The Shrimp ended up being his favorite.

Apollo is our 3 1/2 year-old African Grey parrot we’ve had since December 2020.

  1. "whole turkey is hard to make not dry" I agree, normal whole roasted turkey is dry as heck any way you slice it, even worse if it has stuffing since that increases the cook time. You should try spatchcocking the turkey where you cut the backbone out and press it flat. Its not any insane amount of work if you have good kitchen shears, especially if its a smaller one. Cook flat on top of some chunks of carrots celery and onion in a pan, and it'll cook about an hour faster and WAY more evenly so no way overdone breast and undercooked thigh. Sous vide is another great option, comes out juicer than any other possible method, plus you get a bag of juices that can turn straight into gravy with a little roux. spatchcock (or just halve), sous vide and then brown in the broiler, is like S tier turkey. But doing even one of those makes a huge difference.

  2. The shrimp seems to be greasier than Apollo is used to with how much he's shaking and wiping his head as he goes to town on his new 2nd-to-favorite snack. Maybe someday he'll gingerly disassemble and savor some shrimp the way he carefully sips his pistaches, but he may have a new "interest" in any bug you show him from now on.

  3. I love seeing Apollo fly. Recently Gizmo did an attempt and hurt himself. Everyone: don't try again, poor bird. My thought: why does he always say: Birds don't walk!! He's right, BIRDS FLY. He just needs more oppurtunity.
