At 9:38 in the morning on August 12th, 2020. A train derailed in Scotland, precisely here near to the town of Stonehaven. On that fateful day, a nation received the news that had a fatal train accident took place on the railway line that runs between Aberdeen and Dundee. For the first time in over a decade, a train not only derailed in a devastating accident but induced fatal injury.
Railway accidents have become exceedingly rare in the United Kingdom in recent years, coinciding with this, deaths related to the railway have also drastically decreased to nearly zero. Most deaths related to rail accidents in the UK after 2004 have mostly been linked level crossing incidents. But this never really involved a train going off the rails, with one notable exception in 2007. Needless to say that rail travel in Britain, despite its many flaws, is incredibly safe.
Which may be why so much attention was drawn to the 2020 derailment at Carmont in Scotland. It immediately became headline news across the country. It was the first major rail accident in years. It should be noted right off the start, that this could have been far greater tragedy than it already was. Occurring in 2020 at the height of the Pandemic, the number of rail travellers at that time were limited in numbers. This is the story of the Stonehaven Derailment. We’ll explore what happened here and the events leading up to that fatal accident.

Disaster Breakdown – Written and Produced by Chloe Howie
Disaster Breakdown is an aviation disaster documentary series. Focused on dissecting and analyzing the causes of a plane crash. Air Disasters and accidents is my focus but occasionally, we look at rail accidents too.

whilst there was a certain dismalness to the weather on the day, it was not what would have been called classical BAD weather…. There were strong showers, with occasional torrential downpours, but, even where the storm got bad, it was patchy, with large periods where the weather could be termed as "fair"… especially for that part of the coast.
I would say, compared to the howling winds, fog and freezing drizzle common in a winter storm, they were lulled into a false sense of comfort… even the sun was peaking through, what could go wrong!!! I think, the stop more than anything was a source of exasperation and embarrassment for the crew. they probably pushed themselves into moving fast more than anything else.
As a Scotsman living a little south of Stonehaven I can confirm the weather was wild!
Judging by the radar loop there was a “training” of precipitation through that area. No pun intended
Meanwhile in America we have a train derailment seemingly every other week except ours dont carry passengers but pollutive and sometimes deadly chemicals
I don't usually comment on Youtube, but I need this time.
Chloe, your videos are the best. Really. Not only because of the details, but also how you speak and how didactic it is. It shows a deep knowledge in everything you say (and you are sure to make it easy for us to understand everything), with a tone and projection of your voice that's a joy to watch and hear. You are such an inspiration!
Thank you for your dedicated work!
Is insane how the lazyness of some can have such consequences
Mental wounds not healing.
Driving me insane.
I'm going off the rails on this crazy train.
What is this weather person? Man or woman 😂😂😂😂😂
Sweden actually had a similar rail accident last week cause of the recent storms. I thought you quickly made a video for that.
It shook the enthusiast community, to the core. I was spotting at my local that day, and it was only when I was picked up that I heard of the accident. To think there was a high-profile accident such as that on the same network I was spotting on was terrifying. I remember something happened that day with a worker at the station, i cant remember exactly what happened but it did seem that something had shaken the staff member, and it turned out this may have been it.
Hiya Chloe, I have just subscribed due to this video, really well put together and really informative. I saw York station in the video and i think there was leeds as well? With me being a local lad to thease areas it was really nice to see some local places on YouTube. I honestly wish you all the best in your chanel and I will remain a subscriber. Thank you 🙂
Subcontracting work, the bane of the lives of those trying to find accountability when things go wrong
Love to see you in the weather girl role 🙂
The fact that is this drainage system was ordered in the first place, they knew of the risks in that sector of track. Being a blind turn in a known flood risk area, why was the standard track speed so high to begin with? If the speed hasn't been lowered, then maybe it is time to put good use to CCTV, and have Cameras installed in the sector (and other sectors like it), connected to the Signal box, or the more centralised signalling offices, so that it can be detected.
Great report as usual.
I think the real issue here is that despite the known presence of multiple landslides along the line, and the fact that the route passed through an area known to be susceptible to landslides, the train was not held to restricting or even medium speed, but was cleared for full speed ahead.
Edit: also, the complete lack of crash-worthiness in the passenger cars.
Interesting. I don't remember hearing about this accident at all in my country's news. Must have been swamped by all the cvid news at that time. Yes, I like train accident investigations too so keep them coming.
I'm Scottish and I remember this sad, sad day. It's not often we have big rail incidents up here.
Very good document Chloe very informative.
Debris on track caused it. Train was parked 2 hours. If it would have come back sooner….May be well…may be not.
Let me invite you to a live track Canadian washout. It´s not debris. It´s track roadbed that disappeared. You´ll see how fast it can be. Good viewing.

Please go back to your original format videos, and please don't get offended for it is not my intention! Your videos are great!
Quick question: How is the voice for the narrator changed?
Kinda crazy how fast it can happen that a strong rainstorm can take out a train.
Very interesting video and loved the dig at twitter
Well done.
“tf is a Carillion” beautiful section title
This was an amazing video breaking down a complicated accident in to understandable bites. I love the way new generations of YouTubers are using modeling software to better visualize accidents for lay people to understand. Keep up your great work!
Chloe your research and presentation skills get better and better with each episode. I love the way you break down complex subjects and discuss them in an easy to understand and engaging way. Also loved seeing you present the weather! Thank you!❤
Baahahahaha!!!! Amazing. Disaster breakdown? Check. ✔ Massive train nerdiness? Check.✔ Sidebar to sassy weather report? Effing priceless. ✔✔✔
Liked and subscribed. You rock.
Engaging, sometimes amusing and interesting narration.
She has an odd voice.
GWR hst at penzance, that's love
YouTube suggested me this video (probably because I'm a train enthusiast). What a well researched work, thank you for producing it. Also, I must add, as a Spanish speaker your accent and tone are incredibly clear and beautiful, I could literally listen to audio books with you!
Dear God, is that "Bab's Johnson" or "Dawn Davenport" reading the weather? –
The noise was the rpair of ubbish GEC turbochargers.
You might think that on a service cancelled due to bad weather and turning round to go home, the driver would proceed home cautiously, say at 50mph, especially on a section of track which had a history of flooding problems and there was no rush to get home anyway.
Would like to see some more videos of train disasters “lac Mégantic” disaster is interesting
Wtf eleonor is transgendre or wat ?😂😂😂
Yess another Chloe weather report 😂
Sorry, Eleanor MacCloud I mean
4:15 or pip and e-
GRAYRIGG
Grayrigg was not a Level Crossing Accident…..
It was a derailment at a Crossover caused by bad maintenance.
Stupid people failed to replace bolts after trackwork maintenance…
Even more stupid people who should have inspected the work failed to do so……

That the shower of crooks that were Carillion were allowed anywhere near Critical National Infrastructure is lamentable. The end result, unfortunately with fatal consequences, of treasury driven policies of always going to the cheapest quote even when individual employees provided a litany of negative feedback with the bad news masked by frankly ficticious KPI reports and hopeless undermanning in those tasked to oversee contractors. It's really George Osborne who should be drinking dirty wattir fur his tea in the Bar- as he was was Chancellor at the time of the 'works'.
Jesus Christ of Nazareth is our redeemer!!! We have all sinned. We are all Sinners, we deserve eternal punishment in hell. But the son of God Jesus Christ died on the cross, for our sins. He paid for them with his own blood. And he rose from the dead on the 3rd day! Trust Jesus Christ! Trust his finished work on the cross! Trust the pure and innocent shed blood of Jesus Christ as payment for all your sins!
Your good deeds will NOT erase your sins, but the BLOOD of Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ WILL!❤
I love that train sim is for this story its amazeing
Network Rail still do not maintain trackside drains properly, loads of catch pits around the network are obstructed with vegetation growing out of them. Maintaining trackside drainage was, and still should be essential maintenance.
My girlfriend was due to get on this train at its next stop, of which it never made it to. Good work as always.
