My best friends adopted father used to build race engines. You remind me so much of him. Even in his twilight, (he was much more feeble than Sam), but he loved a hot rod. This was in the 90's and he built square body chevy trucks then. Every truck he built, he put a 72 Monte Carlo hood ornament on, and all of them would run like hell. He'd take us for rides as a teenager, and he was in his late 70s. He'd floor it with just his toe, hold on to it for a while, and look over and say. "Boy, this one sure has the ginger in it, don't it?". Good man. Him and my friend have both since passed, but good memories.
