In my own run I decided to play the middle difficulty for my first time through and I definitely should have gone with Warlord. So far my strategy of "Run Diana into the middle of everybody and yell 'have a go then, if you think you're hard enough' and wait for the entire enemy army to commit suicide" has worked out against every single fight except the one where you're supposed to lose (and even there it took like 5 or 6 rounds of cannon fire to put her down). Paladins are good, but Valkyries are cavalry and have in and out of battle healing capabilities, so that's what I've mostly been going with. Diana leading a cavalry squad feels downright unfair a lot of the time.
Lysander may not be great overall, but he does have like a billion leadership which is pretty handy since it means you can replace his starting crew with a full complement or pretty much any unit type.
Worth noting that changing class is effectively free – You get back any resources spent up, so you can downgrade class to look at your other options and then immediately go back up again to the same class without losing anything. This also means that if you can't get the class up you want yet, you may still benefit from going to a higher tier and getting the better stat growths that class provides until the unit has enough to actually get the level up you want. (For example I had a T2 heavy cav unit that had enough strength for Zweihander but not T3 heavy cav so I upgraded it to Zweihander until it picked up enough levels to swap over to T3 cav)
