  1. This is the first Super Metroid playthrough I've been able to stick out to the end and I've ended up having more appreciation for the game than most videos of it suggest it deserves, good work Stephen.

  2. While the metroid 2 remake is only on 3ds and is understandable why you would skip it for now, if you play Dread look up the chozo memories from Samus Returns to understand Dread's story as it is the finale of the 2D Metroid story

  3. Stephen: "as a general rule I don't make promises" People patiently waiting for ICO: "He'll get there, im pretty sure he said he'd get to us before he plays GTA5, but maybe he meant GTA6?"

  4. No joke, I have really wanted a Zelda/Metroid real crossover game, or at least a game where someone from medieval times gets sent to a sci-fi future and a future person gets sent to the Middle Ages and they have to both find their way back home respectively, for a long while now.

  5. Looking at the "can't trust the X-ray" room once again now many years later, I strongly suspect that the X-ray not revealing the fake walls in that one room in particular is an oversight, because it seems like a very arbitrary thing for it to not highlight the not-necessarily-required-but-clearly-very-intended path out of Norfair.

I suspect it might have something to do with the enemies that light the room also being in that same room, messing with how the X-ray interacts with and reveals the foreground elements, and basically keeping it from working as intended. Thinking about the other rooms in the game where those enemies exist, I don't think there actually is anything for the X-ray to reveal in those rooms, but I may well have forgotten after all these years.

Also, seconding the comment that you should give Zero Mission a shot even if on your own time. It's more or less Metroid 1 given the Super Metroid sort of treatment. The gameplay will feel very similar, with probably the biggest difference being Samus's floatiness in Metroid 1-3 is more or less gone (instead Samus jumps/falls more similarly to how she does in Fusion, making her control much snappier. It's kind of like the difference felt in going from Smash 64 to Melee)

Also also, if you don't already know, you will be pleased to hear that Super is the last game where the Space Jump is janky. All later Metroid games, Zero Mission included, now not only let you Space Jump at any point in the descent (as opposed to just only when you start to descend), you can also enter a somersault while mid-jump by just pressing jump again, so you won't be screwed out of repeated jumps if you inadvertently make a normal jump.

  6. Good work with your first run through of Super Metroid. You collected quite a few of the supplies. Reserve tank 4 is in Maridia. The left path you took below the sand. There's one to the right along with a missile pack. Yeah I agree that space jump was a little weird at first. But once you get screw attack, it's easier.

My only gripe about this is your memory. I wish you would leave yourself notes.

Looking forward to Fusion. I do hope you consider Zero Mission since it plays different to the original.

  7. Yeah, there's only one room where the X-Ray Scope doesn't work (well, probably two or three, but this is the only one where it actually matters) because the lighting effect from those fireflies uses the same rendering layer as the X-Ray Scope, meaning it breaks the X-Ray Scope since they can't use that layer to disguise the openings in the wall. It's a bit of a mean move since it does break with one of the big conceits of the game up to this point – but it is the only place that they do that.

Of course, it's not the ONLY mean secret they have in the game, but it is absolutely one of the most memorable.

  8. I definitely think you should play Zero Mission before Dread, whether before or after fusion probably won't make much difference? but before Dread is definitely the way to go no matter what. Samus Returns is a bit more iffy to a lot of people because of the AM2R debacle but I think it's a really good remake as well, just not at zero mission's level.

  9. wait I just got to the end, please play dread before jumping to prime! playing every game of the mainline except for dread would be such a tease lol, Dread is the conclusion of the story of all of the first four Metroid games and I think it will hit better for you and be less difficult having played the rest of the games recently. If you're trying to look at it from a gameplay progression standpoint, prime doesn't play into the main series at all, and also putting 3-4 games in front of dread would be mean lol

  10. 2:38:48 It's not a Metroid unless you have at least one crazy bomb threatening to go off at some point. It's like how Lethal Weapon typically has a sequence involving driving a car clear through a building.

(it's been a really Hot Minute since I've seen any Lethal Weapon, but that's what I remember most about them…)

also: as iconic as the Ridley/Major Boss Encounter theme is, and how it can be applied to other high-stress scenarios like… escaping from an exploding planet, I feel like the vanilla/Zero Mission escape theme just hits a tiny bit better. Zero Mission's is especially satisfying.

2:43:54 This is generally why I prefer the GBA Metroids. Super is very good, but the controls are JUUUUST mildly jank enough where it trips me pretty badly. It's almost certainly a Skill Issue on my part, and I'll fully admit to being spoiled on GBA controls. Super definitely falls into the "prefer to watch rather than play" category for me.

I know it's never going to happen at this point, but during the GBA era I wanted there to be an update to Super that would implement Fusion or Zero Mission's controls. After all, some iconic SNES titles got ported to GBA (Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island and Zelda:LttP), so you'd think Super Metroid would have gotten the same treatment. Unfortunately it was not, but I'm satisfied with Zero Mission being the closest one gets to "updated Super."

2:56:18 And unlike your previous ones, a GBA layout can be used twice!

obligatory errata: Fusion is built upon Wario Land 4's engine. I low-key wish there was fan art of Wario trying to stuff himself into a Power Suit. Also low-key suggesting that whenever you get to Fusion, it would be funny if Wario became one of the randomly-generated suits in the alerts, hehe

  11. So you people realize he only talks to subs right? You have to follow and they don't say 2 words about it but you people are still dumb enough to praise him and give him money. That is totally sad and pathetic
