Stranded in a Lookout Tower by a Surprise Snowstorm. Mountain top rescue

I got called by a couple who was stranded in a mountain top lookout tower by a surprise snow that came a day early. They had planned to leave that morning before the snow came the following evening, but when they woke up they were greeted by around 18” of snow that their Subaru couldn’t get through. What they didn’t know was that down the mountain farther the snow was WAY worse and they were in a lot more serious of a situation than they thought.
When they called me, we decided that since there was no more snow coming that day or night, it would make sense to wait until the following day so that we had a full day to perform the rescue, and that allowed me to formulate a better plan. Since this was so far away from home, and was so deep into the wilderness, I didn’t want to try this one alone. So I called my buddy Adam with Remote Access Medical, and he brought along his medic Bryan to help out.
The following morning we took my American Track Truck @Jeep, and Adam’s @AmericanExpeditionVehicles Prospector up and
ran into FAR more snow than we were expecting. We ended up hitting about 4’ of snow at a very low elevation and all came to the conclusion that there was no way that car was getting out in one piece, so this was most likely turning into a people rescue mission, not a vehicle recovery. After an hour and a half of pushing through the snow, we finally made it to the top were we had a long conversation with the owners and they made the call to take the risk, and try to get the car out anyways.

  1. A lot of people suggest a snowplow, but there’s very good reason we don’t use one. Number one is that there is no way in hell any normal sized vehicle is pushing through that deep of snow with a plow. Keep in mind that there was another foot to foot and a half of snow under how far we were sinking down in that intro clip. Notice that the highway departments all over the country use full size dump trucks loaded with weight in the back to plow through up to a couple feet of FRESH snow, and then have to switch to snowblowers when it gets any deeper than that. It’s simply not feasible/possible to plow roads all over the forests, especially once we get a little later into the season and the snow hardens up.

The other reason is that we are not the only ones who use these roads and trails. These are all winter recreation areas used by off readers, snowmobilers, skiers, and snow shoers. The forest service would never allow us to destroy their winter recreation areas to save someone’s vehicle. This particular road we were on is one of those areas that closes to wheeled vehicles in less than two weeks and becomes a very popular snowmobile trail for the rest of the season. Removing all the snow from a major snowmobile trail right before it opens is simply NOT an option, even if it was possible to do so.

Long story short, plow blades are cheap and if they actually worked for the type of recoveries I do, I would already have one.

  2. So I was sitting here thinking. Why didn't you bring a snow plow with you. Knowing they have a vehicle. I mean if that was me I would have told you guys to go home and I will find someone that can do it. But then you tell them also that those ropes would rip off the front of the car which I was sitting here laughing if anything they would just bend up a little bit where the ropes were I don't really see nothing happening to that front when I seen that nothing happened. If you would have left them that one and it had been a rescue that would have been abandonment I believe you would have been responsible for them if anything was to happen because your job was to get them off the mountain with their vehicle and his wife. Sometimes people need to come full quit to do the job correctly. Next time call heavy D. He would have came with his Black hawk. And text your car to the helicopter and put you down wherever you wanted to go LOL

  3. YAY for having Nate along on a rescue! THANK you for making the trek up to Mt. Hood to get these folks outta their mess. you assembled a stella team Casey!! and you are far more than the dude with the camera! Amazing part of the Mt Hood backcountry up there. Such a bummer you had to go the long way and make it a 15 mile haul. The track Jeep is and did amazing! I think you totally made the right call taking them back via the snow park off 35 and send them north to Hood River. It's a Subie and they are invincible 😉 at least as long as safely tethered to a Jeep!! What an amazing rescue and video Casey!!

  4. Casey at 13:47 when you're looking for a place to hook up to his car there's a round plug in the front that if you pop it out and get the eyelet out of the trunk by the spare tire and jack. Screw it in and you can use it to to hook to and pull the car.

  6. Nice! That scenery was beautiful and that lookout tower was awesome! Love how well the jeep did with the tracks. I thought that Subaru was going to be a snow plow. 😂 what gloves are you wearing? Those are nice.
