Two and a half years since the West imposed sanctions against Russia for their rapid escalation of its war with Ukraine, Aeroflot and other airlines are still managing to stay airborne. How is this possible?

In today’s video, we’ll uncover what’s going on with the 400 Western aircraft stolen by Russia and the other ways that its aviation industry is working around Western sanctions to access crucial supplies.

  1. Great update. Ultimately there is no loyalty or morality in capitalism and that is our weakness, a weakness that the anti democratic Oligarchs of the world are manipulating, thus avoiding creating a united front against them. They learned from the history of the 1930s.

  2. The USSR obviously had an entire industry set up to build jets before 1992. Obviously most off that fell apart, but I certainly don't think it would be impossible for Russia to set up a new system to manufacture a fully Russian aircraft, especially considering they've obviously built their own military jets for years. I'm certainly not insinuating that it wouldn't be a massively complex undertaking, but in the long run even Putin has to understand that unless China figures out how to build a solid Airbus knock-off, they are going to have to do it themselves.

  3. You seem to be forgetting that Russian Aeroflot was once the largest airline in the world. That was during the Soviet times and all it’s planes were produced domestically back then.

  4. Sensational and complete bollocks as always Petter.

Glad to see you haven’t changed over the years.

My 2024 glance into your ‘empire’ shows that you are still the same.

  5. I'm quite sure many actual certified parts come from China. Boeing and Airbus got assembly lines over there so it wouldn't surprise me they got repair shops for the same parts too.

  6. Mentour, I used to love your shows until after watching your first analysis of this issue. For it wasn't long before I realized that it was entirely by the malign delusions of Western governments, the same governments that were going to "reduce the rouble into rubble" (copyright Joe Biden, aka The Slobbering Genocidaire). And we know how that ended: with Russia outperforming Western economies, according to … wait for it … the IMF.

What you (and Western governments) still refuse to realize is that Russia is not the "gas station with nukes", as John McCain infamously described it. It is a highly industrialized, high-tech country with some of the best scientists and mathematicians on earth. Just take a look at their weapons and air-defence systems if in doubt.

If still in doubt, consider this: that a country whose foreign reserves (totalling hundreds of billions of USD) have been seized, and is under the most severe economic sanctions in human history is outperforming those who imposed the sanctions in every conceivable respect. Why should its aviation industry be different?

I know the Ukraine war has incurably warped the collective Western mind about Russia, but you might come to a different conclusion about the country if you could just ignore the West's propaganda for a brief moment.

  7. During WWII, the Russians built a licensed copy of the Douglas DC-3. The DC-3, C-47, or whatever you want to call it, was a wonderful aircraft for its day. Perhaps the Russians could dust off the old plans and start building that one again. It was slow, but reliable.

  8. Russia is not communist anymore. And Russia is not the problem. The Rothschilds are the boil on the world's ass. They own the world bank and are estimated worth of 500 Trillion dollars they stole the past 1,000 years 😮 Russia has 75 Trillion dollars in resources and the New World Order wants to break Russia up and steal the Money 😢

  9. I am surprised the lessors are even bothering with any legalities. I thought that these days, countries and companies can just make up their own 'legal' reasons for doing things, to justify their actions, irrespective of any precedents or any existing international laws. Legalities are just 'window dressing' these days, aren't they? The world is now a legal 'free-for-all', as far as I can see.

  10. If this continues on for years more, it seems inevitable that Russia will begin grounding aircraft and harvesting parts from them. Between that, the ability to smuggle in aircraft from abroad, and the possibility of actually managing to produce a few aircraft internally, they should be able to keep things going for years more. Ish.

  11. Peter, don't underestimate Russia's ability to develop and build (apart from the aircraft bodies), all kinds of avionics and computerized systems for their aircraft.
They've have shown in the past to excel in aviation matters, including space exploration craft, so my guess is, given a little time, they will come up
with their own creations fully equipped with home made navigation systems.
They have already done this with their military aircraft so, it's not beyond their capabilities.

  12. Interestingly there are no policing of OEM SBs, ADs or SLs data from non effected countries or Airlines from exporting paper material to sanctioned countries, such materials in the hands of very competent mechanics and engineers who may have previously held the necessary ratings and licences now still have the ability to sort of be compliant with the maintenance and maintaining of a variety of western built aircraft.
It may not be that Western airline systems like to hear but it’s still a safer method than relying on counterfeit parts etc.
Would I personally fly on Soviet lessee aircraft …. Probably not but if push comes to shove then yes but only under extreme duress. My euros worth ?

  13. The real goal of those sanctions is to forcibly involve everyone on that war so they can manipulate the entire world because of that, even those not directly involved on it. That is the real use of a war, after all. Not taking part on any sides is the best any of us can do not to be manipulated all along. No need to say nobody likes wars, no matter who is wrong and who is (supposedly) right.
World aviation is not so safe after all, because it is subject of somebody else's wars and much more. People forgot about themselves because all of this.

  14. Ideally civilian aviation would be exempt from sanctions but if we do that parts intended for civilian aircraft will end up in military aircraft.
Regarding the case it's not like anybody had a choice to abandon the aircraft or lease agreement, lawyers will disagree of course of functionally and practically the aircraft have been illegally detained. If they have been stripped or interfered with (as they have been) call it illegal misappropriation of the aircraft. They are not going to want to do this as they can't pursue the perpetrators.

Post sanctions, every RU aircraft is going to be restricted from foreign airspace until it's proven that it's safe to fly and no leasing or insurance company is going to touch RU aircraft. They have made a really ugly bed they are going to have to lay in.

  15. 17:00 – this is why they are now so busy hastily developing their own analogues, which they once did but mainly ceased back in 90es. It is way cheaper and way better to manufacture most of such parts and assemblies domestically, just as China does.

  16. 22:10 Russian kakistocracy has been inspired by British pathway of self-destructive descent into decay of parasitic degeneracy. Britain is now hollow hull of it former self, with no automotive, aerospace, or even steel production whatsoever. Only production of some spares still exists. It is rather a money laundering machine, masquerading as a country. Russia has suffocated most of its aerospace, automotive and most of other industries in the same very lesser-than-humanic way, and the rebirth under Western pressure will be lengthy and painstaking. It is akin to recovery from decades of drug abuse.
