We don't deserve Paul Thomas Anderson if all we pay to see are superhero movies all the time.
David Zaslav: I care so much about preserving films, I preserved a $90m movie!
I love to see two of the greatest directors ever, Steven Spielberg and Paul Thomas Anderson working hard to keep cinematic history preserved. And I really appreciate that Warner-Discovery CEO David Zaslav is as enthusiastic about the Rescue Operation of Films and specifically all the wonderful films of the Warner Bros library. I really appreciate that this collective party has restored Rio Bravo and East Of Eden, two of my all-time favorite movies. I also appreciate that David Zaslav gave a shout out to some of Warner Bros most courageous films, Black Legion (1937), which starred Humphrey Bogart in a powerful performance, Confessions Of A Nazi Spy (1939), with Edward G. Robinson in a powerful performance, and Gentleman's Agreement, which won the Oscar for Best Picture in 1948 and starred Gregory Peck in a powerful performance. All of these were groundbreaking, socially conscious films and we all appreciate Warner Bros for having the courage to make them.
Thanks for the interview, TCM and Ben Mankiewicz.
Go down swinging, Kodak.
PTA: "There's a great Max Ophuls movie called…" He could've named just about any Max Ophuls film. š
One of my favorite filmmakers ever, talking about one of my favorite filmmakers ever. La Ronde, Le Plaisir, The Earrings Of Madame de… and Lola Montes are among the greatest of all time.
I know he runs the corporation that owns TCM, but Iām not sure Iād call David Zaslav a āpreservationistā lol
I wanted to hate David for the Max shakeup but I actually respect his thought process
How refreshing to see a head of a studio nowadays who is actually a movie lover and not just concerned with the bottom line. We need more CEOs like this guy.
David Zaslav being on a panel about preserving film and then taking off films on HBOmax for tax write-offs is very ironic.
Steven Spielberg is my second all time favorite director; Ishiro Honda is my first. Ishiro Honda & Akira Ifukube were the Steven Spielberg & John Williams of Japan from 1954-1975 (with the four battling each other in 1975 with Honda/Ifukubeās Terror of MechaGodzilla vs Spielberg/Williamsā Jaws). Fun fact: Steven Spielberg cited Ishiro Hondaās original Godzilla film as the main inspiration for the original Jurassic Park film. And from 1965-1995, Akira Ifukube and John Williams battled each other (with Williams earning his five Oscar wins and several other nominations in that timespan). Fun fact: John Williams cited Akira Ifukube (and others) as inspiration for him becoming a composer. Another fun fact: Akira Ifukube died on February 8th 2006 at age 91 (which was on John Williamsā then-74th birthday)
Zaslav's idea of film preservation is to remake them all.
Iām torn about Zazlav. He speaks convincingly here but of course heās single-handedly destroyed so many films/series by removing them from HBO to save on lisencing. But then again, WB was run-in-to-the-ground by Covid and has been hemorrhaging ever since. Maybe itās worth sacrificing a few vinyls and mrs harrisās to keep Warner brothers alive? Maybe heās full of shit.
Whatās the name of the one Chris Nolan brought up??
"And it's a way for us to say what's OK and what's not OK."
No, it isn't
Hey Paul, Steven, can you ask David to restore and release The Devils (1971)?
Gotta give him credit, as much flack as Zaslov has taken on since arriving at WB, he comes across very genuine here, and says all the right things. I don't care what his motives are in continuing support of TCM, it's just good to know it's still a priority and won't get axed in the endless corporate restructuring of the WB.
This was great. As a teacher of Film Appreciation, these interviews sure help inspire me when not able to be apart of these events. Keep up the wonderful work. Film does indeed teach us how to be a good person and citizen. ā¤
I miss seeing films projected with scratches, and pops at reel changes. It was part of the experience.
PTAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Who else is fatigued by superhero movies
Tarantino and Edgar Wright should be in this
This was encouraging to see. Impressive panel. The fact that they still can restore One Eyed Jacks, and shall, pleased me to no end. Ty.šš
A real DVD was never made of Ironweed, with Jack Nicholson, Meryl Streep and Tom Waits. It's made from the VHS, and looks it.
Zaslav sure has a punchable face
Am I the only one who doesnāt think Fablemans is that great? Donāt get me wrong. There are some amazing scenes but itās way to long!
Spielberg directed some of the best movies of all time. Jaws, Duel, ET, Raiders, and Schindlerās List but his need to constantly direct has rendered such mediocre movies. Especially the second part of his career which starts after private Ryan and begins with A.I.
Great sequences but overall kinda a mess. And I love Spielberg
