Review: Hot Blood (PlayStation 4/5, Switch & Steam) – Defunct Games

Defunct Games reviews Hot Blood, the new brawler from EastAsiaSoft available now on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Switch and PC.

Hot Blood is a 3D beat ‘em up where a purple-haired woman punches and kicks her way through a whole mall worth of zombies. While there are some fun shopping-related monster types and lots of different shops to clear out, the action gets old quickly and there’s not enough to the gameplay to be considered one of the better brawlers. Worst of all, for a game that is constantly reminding you to buy new (and increasingly skimpier) outfits for our attractive heroine, there’s not enough variety to choose between and nothing in the way of accessories. It’s cheap and the mall setting is fun, but you’re better off waiting for Capcom’s upcoming Dead Rising remaster. Hot Blood left me cold.

  1. The Hentai Vs. Evil review was one of the first videos of yours I saw. It's crazy how little has changed since then – EastAsiaSoft still puts out games like this and you still make great videos.

  2. EastAsiaSoft is a weird publisher for sure. In terms of physical games, usually these booba games stay on PlayAsia, but everything else does seem to get western releases through either LRG or Red Art Games.

QOTD; Oh boy, so hard to say. There are so many different takes on it – from Resident Evil to Lollipop Chainsaw, Dead Island and Stubbs the Zombie.

Speaking of; for folks who want something in this vein, wait a little bit for the upcoming remaster of Suda51's Lollipop Chainsaw.

  3. Idk, think I may stick with Lollipop Chainsaw. Looks to me like that's what they were copying, plus that game doesn't always bug you to change outfits. 😉 As for the question, oh sure, I could easily say Resident Evil, but think I may go a bit more Old School with Zombies Ate My Neighbors. I just remember playing that on dad's old SNES, and having so much fun with that.

  4. Man, Frank West seems like he has more outfitd to pick from, even women's outfitd if that's your liking! And Juliet Starling has more and varied outfits too… but I get you can't really compare the two when they're clearly on very different levels of budget. I will say that the girls models remind me of near PS2, or maybe early 3D PC game models what with her legs even showing the seams where the polygons are fused together… and while a part of me is almost charmed by something so old-looking, I don't think I'll be taking a deeper look at this. It's all just a little TOO low-budget for me.

And for zombies? Killer 7… if that counts?
