I think theming is one part of how we interface with games, and just as with all other aspects of gaming, people enjoy it in different ways at different times. I've played more than a few abstracts where my enjoyment was increased because they were themeless. That was the type of experience I was after. To add story to it would have cluttered it up, and changed the way I felt about it for the worse. So I don't think it is universally true that adding story to a human endeavour is a positive.
I do believe a weaker statement, that adding theme is worth considering, and can have many positive results.
