Starship Flight Test

Starship gave us quite a show during today’s first flight test of a fully integrated Starship and Super Heavy rocket from Starbase in Texas.

At 8:33 a.m. CT, Starship successfully lifted off from the orbital launch pad for the first time. The vehicle cleared the pad and beach as Starship climbed to an apogee of ~39 km over the Gulf of Mexico – the highest of any Starship to-date. The vehicle experienced multiple engines out during the flight test, lost altitude, and began to tumble. The flight termination system was commanded on both the booster and ship. As is standard procedure, the pad and surrounding area was cleared well in advance of the test, and we expect the road and beach near the pad to remain closed until tomorrow.

With a test like this, success comes from what we learn, and we learned a tremendous amount about the vehicle and ground systems today that will help us improve on future flights of Starship.

Thank you to our customers, Cameron County, and the wider community for the continued support and encouragement. And congratulations to the entire SpaceX team on an exciting first flight test of Starship!

  2. Elmo began the destruction of Starship (and the launchpad) years ago by vetoing flame trenches and water deluge on the launchpad. You can see giant chunks of concrete blasted up into the air alongside the rocket. You can't see the ones that smashed into the bottom of the rocket, knocking out multiple engines.

  3. Hindsight is 20/20…change to the separation mechanism for Starship from the tried and tested in Falcon 9 program, and flame diverter. Anyway no worries…this is agile development, do, learn, fix, do.

  7. What a embarrasing disaster, SpaceX cut so many corners on this launch and caused a massive amount of damage to the surrounding areas, raining down debris and dumping a bunch of garbage into the ocean. Clown company run by clowns.

  8. Awesome job SpaceX. You HAVE to do something about the launch site. Not having thrust diverters, water dampeners you can literally see chunks of concrete and debris flying up before the rocket leaves the pad. Not good. The rest of the flight was a huge success getting much needed telemetry and data. Congrats!

  9. What a over rated, over complex price of machinery that failed as it should. Tobad this rich kid doesn't invest in simple technology. Always gotta be complex, which leads to disasters. Feel sorry for the crew going to Mars, doomed trip.

  10. I realize how important a project like this is, I just wish it wasn't being accomplished by a company owned by one of the worst examples of a human being we currently have on planet Earth.

  11. 🤔🤔🤔🤨 I always wonder why they want to sent integrated starship at first launch itself. Why can't they integrate a Dummy starship in place of actual starship to understand and release key data for realising the integrated model this might help them save alot of cost during the first stage of
    Integrated testing.
Here even the starship didn't separate.
(3 idiots …..why can't we use pencil in space)
