  1. First thing i gotta ask which mod has the station defense? You may have mentioned it but i probably missed it. Now onto this video i think you had asolid fleet but bad tactics for that first fight because i found against fighter heavy/fast fleets the low tech like your legion fail just by their flank being exposed and destroyed quickly after that. I love midline ships personally but i found using low tech like legion in a type of wall set up is the best to keep fighters and freighters from sneaking up taking out the engine and thus the low tech ship becomes defenseless. I use a cruiser/capital with a couple destroyer or smaller ship behind it escorting it and building a wall like that. Pd should work if you use it in the method i laid out since the smaller escorts can keep the fighters off the exposed tail of the ships.

  2. Once thing I would point out is the mod author states that it is recommended to have some faction mods installed to slow down their growth because the Hivers will roll over a vanilla sector. That first fight you spread your fleet apart while the hivers grouped up. I would recommend keeping your fleet together when they do that and burn them down.

  3. Another thing you mention in this run is you are thinking of switching to beams. That has that added benefit of constant damage to their phase ships forcing them to come out before they fully regen their hull but also beams will target fighters and missiles if an enemy ship is not in range so they act as backup PD. Lastly when the Hivers have all their large ships bunched up link in your first fight, you may want to use a fast durable frigate to tag one of the ships on the peripheral and then scoot out to lure it away from the bunch.
