Starfield Was a Mistake | An Analytical Review

From the makers of Fallout 76, The Elder Scrolls: Blades, and The Elder Scrolls: Castles, comes Bethesda Softworks’ most ambitious RPG yet: STARFIELD. A game DESIGNED to be played for a DECADE.

In this analytical review/deconstruction/retrospective, I look at how Bethesda utterly fails to make Starfield about anything. How they demonstrate a complete lack of understanding of the type of game they are trying to make, the genres it inhabits, market trends and advancements, and even what made their past games like Skyrim successful. As a result, Starfield turned out to be a joyless, soulless, bland mess of disjointed ideas that ended up disappointing pretty much everyone, Microsoft included.

  1. re: changing backgrounds and character traits – backgrounds may have intentionally been disallowed due to the way the levelling system works. Otherwise you have to make it so that NG+ does not include your "tag skills" or give the player 3 extra skill points for free if they switch into something with skills they don't have.

With traits, the more I think about it the more I think they should have just been randomized on NG+. Both for the surprise variety and because it's a lot more variety to have locked behind the requirement to roll an entire new character.

  2. 1:44:00 Bethesda intentionally obfuscated the purpose of their own game's systems so people would talk about it. Out of all of their assheaded decisions they made with this game, this is truly one of them. From saying a skill "slightly" increases something, "noticeably" changes something, "marginally" changes something, there is no way they aren't backhanding everyone who wants to look into how their game functions.
and then they treat discovering how their game is supposed to function like it's a fun bonus you get give me a fucking break

  3. After about 180 hours, 40 of which was 100 percenting the tutorial world I uninstalled. So many lies, so boring, and so repetitive.

I barely discovered the Starborn before I noped out.

And I have 1000s of hours in Fallout 4.

Starfield is a downgrade in EVERY way.

I may come back if they can No Mans Sky it, but I doubt it.

    Great review!

  4. I'm so happy to watch this video come out after all the hardship you had making it! It was so worth waiting and checking your twitter. Rewatching your Starfield preview until seeing the finished video in my youtube feed.

Your right that the most interesting thing about starfield is the meta stuff outside of the game with how people responded to it.

so many creators as you say have their "egg on their face moments" when they gave starfield a high rating before the public concensus was made clear at release being the opposite. The denial of the game being bad with those dev responses to negative steam reviews and emil's twitter thread. Admitting to hubris and devs leavig the studio. The weird and hilarious drama of Neverknowsbest "you called me a cuck" thing.

What a waste of the amazing opportunity of a new ip where they had so much money, talent, and player's interest. where any other indie dev would kill to have.

Rest easy that all the hard work researching and analyising what was wrong with the game and the reception around it paid off! I'll be for sure rewatching this many times and gonna watch that podcast with you and pat that came out the same day of this. 😎👍❤️

I can't wait to see your next video hopefully more enjoyable to make.

  5. I'm sorry you've been going through it lately. Speaking for myself, I'd much rather wait ages for a good, interesting, intelligent video like this one than expect you to simply churn stuff out and ignore your own health. I hope things are better for you now!

  6. I honestly never even knew about the "greatest hits" moments you mentioned in the boss fight around 3:36:55 and how it teleports you to different scenes from the story. I always just used the freeze power on them and gunned them down with my overpowered shotgun build, and that's after having done 4 playthroughs lol

  7. Ah, well, Buddha Coulda Woulda. There's a game plus of this universe somewhere where Starfield is a good game we enjoy playing and replaying. Unfortunately, it's not in this playthrough.

  8. I think "Xbox" will basically become a line of pre-built gaming PCs designed with a gaming OS based on windows, because a lot of their shareholders want them out of the gaming business altogether, but they see too much potential to make money as a service provider and publisher.
