Prominent American photojournalist Arthur Rothstein was working for the United Nations at the end of World War II when he traveled through a community of Jewish refugees living in Shanghai, China. Moved by their stories of persecution and displacement in Europe, followed by acceptance and inclusion in China, he documented their lives through a series of photographs. Ann Rothstein-Segan, Ph.D. and her husband, Brodie Hefner, joined us to share more about Ann’s father and speak about the historical significance of the collection.
This program took place in person at the Museum on August 8, 2024 as the opening program for “Hidden History: Recounting the Shanghai Jewish Story,” open at the Museum August 9, 2024 to February 16, 2025.
