SpaceX Starship Orbital Flight Test Updates

SpaceX is gearing up for a key test of its immense rocket that is designed for commercial launches, as well as the Mars mission Elon Musk has long sought.

Near a beach east of Brownsville, Texas, employees at Mr. Muskโ€™s space company are preparing for the inaugural orbital flight of Starship, the towering rocket system the company has been developing for years to one day launch into deep space. The initial test mission would last around 90 minutes, beginning with a fiery blast of the shipโ€™s booster over the Gulf of Mexico, SpaceX has said in a regulatory filing.

It isnโ€™t clear when SpaceX will attempt the first flight, after dates Mr. Musk has discussed came and went. Some officials at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, a customer for a version of Starship, previously said they thought the mission could occur in early December. Mr. Musk, who acquired Twitter Inc. and recently delivered Tesla Inc.โ€™s first all-electric semitrailer trucks, has described getting Starship into orbit as one of his main goals. At SpaceX, which Mr. Musk founded in 2002 and still leads, he has said the rocket system is consuming significant resources and faces formidable technical hurdles.

  1. They need to make a mobile flame diverter they can slide under the booster when it comes time to test or launch and protect the concrete. The concrete will never stand up to 33 raptor engines. It just ainโ€™t gonna happen.

  2. Tiles falling down. Concrete shooting up. Two problems without any solution in the near future! Going back to the drawing board?? Also catching Booster and Starship mid air is a doomsday waiting to happen. Just need to fail once to destroy the entire site. How many Falcon 9s and Starships failed during landing tests? Which is way easier to accomplish! Don't take me wrong. I would love to see it working!! Happy Holidays!!!

  3. I just hope they don't take any unnecessary chances. If they have a major failure, it will set things back months. I'm 'guessing' B7 will be used but they are preparing for another launch right away (if all goes well with B7 and the Pad).

  4. I am not a big fan of the arrangement of the launch tower, spaceship and the tank farm being so close together. All it would take is one huge explosion and that would put Elon's plans back years. Also, the starship at the Florida site has the same problems but if an explosion would happen there…no resupply to the ISS etc… I shake my head every time I look at the StarBase's videos and see so much complexity and I say to myself 'if only one of these devises does not work then'??? Anyway, thank you for the videos this whole year and I hope u and family have a happy holiday and a happy New Year ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. As I said over at Marcus, this thing is years away. I'm actually concerned that there will be a delay of the Moon landings because there will be no HLS anywhere near ready. They've been working on the launch pad itself for two years. So much for the perceived "Rapid pace!" of SpaceX. However, I do feel like second gear will be achieved when they stop playing around with the launch pad, and allot of test flights can be had. Then they can work out all the bugs and give the ship a proper shakedown.

  6. I think they should design the HLS in two parts: A heavy stage with the big engines for Lunar orbit and an upper stage for landing. This will give them way, way more delta V! The current design has too little delta V for the Moon, it is designed for Mars with an atmosphere for braking.

  7. Only time will tell, It seem that after the test tanks at the gun range there was a lot of things added. And Toni, howโ€™s your rocket launch pad coming along, thatโ€™s right your just building a disposable rocket.
