Hang on, when Sonic progresses further through the islands, he looks in a worser condition than he is. Also, wasn't Sage changing as she looked? Her body was white for a slight moment, so I'm assuming when Eggman tampered with the tower at the beginning of the game, he caused Sage's corruption.
