  1. Kelsea.. Your emotional reaction tore me apart. As much as I love the show, I should know by now don't get emotionally attached to any of the characters. Thank you so all these great reactions! Glad I found your site!

  2. I've seen a few people questioning Ellie, esp those who haven't played the game ( because in the game it was inevitable ) about why didn't she tell Joel or Henry, they could've cut his leg off to prevent whatsoever. The thing is at the end of the day they're still kids, kids will for sure do that, they'd think it will work. I loved how they managed to remind us both of their innocence which made it even more heartbreaking. Also i read somewhere that if no one ever came in Sam's view or touched him he would just probably sit there forever because he's deaf.

  3. As devastating as the game, so relive it twice is… uugh! 😭
As for the whole infected's stages here a list of them ordered in stages:
    – Runner -> the most common infected because it's the first stage
    – Stalker -> runner but enhanced in movement and resistance (the little girl you saw trying to grab Ellie inside the car in this episode)
    – Clicker -> no need to say anything about them, you saw in the museum what they are and capable of
    – Bloater -> yeah, THAT HUGE thing
There is another one of these but I'll keep it secret because they introduced them.. way later!

P.S. about the death at 28:46.. that's a game over animation in the game.. yeah!

  4. There are 4 stages of infection in The Last of Us. They are Runner, Stalker, Clicker, and Bloater. There are two other kinds Shambler (which replaces Bloaters in wet climates) and the Rat-King which is an amalgam of the various types with a Bloater (usually a few Runners, Clickers and a Bloater). The Rat-King is believed to only come about when many infected are sealed in a confined space and the fungus literally grows and joins all the infected together.

As you saw in this episode, Bloaters are very dangerous on a few levels. First, their infection has been running for a long time, and as such have developed harden fungal plates that makes shooting them less effective. Second, they are extremely powerful and due to their strength you cannot go to to toe with one without it insta-killing you. Fire is your best weapon to use on them, but they still pack a punch if you don't kite them a bit.

  5. Henry indirectly killed someone’s brother to save his own brother. Instead, his brother ended up being the first person he killed. After that, Henry views the murder of Kathleen’s brother as in vain, thus viewing himself as a needless killer – a bad person, so he kills himself.

Hard to get more tragic than that! They were so close to escaping, and he acted with good intentions, and lost everything.

  6. The show is putting us in Ellie’s shoes…
We knew about the immunity but then we (as Ellie) meet Tess and lose her, then Sam. The way we feel (why, we just met them, they where so cute, this is not fair) is exactly what she’s feeling…

  7. In real life, if your brother needed a heart transplant to live, the idea of murdering someone else to get a heart seems abhorrent. One person cannot decide that their brother is worth more than someone else.

But that is effectively what Henry does to save sam.

Moral? Probably not. Understandable? For sure.

This perception of injustice is what fuels Kathleen’s need for revenge. In a vacuum, she is right to say her brother should not have been killed, even to save another. But she lets emotion cloud her judgement and basically goes crazy with bloodlust, neglecting the needs of her group.

    Moral? Probably not. Understandable? Yes.

If someone were to kill Ellie, how far would Joel have to go for us to say “woah that’s too much!” In terms of both morality and understanding. I have a feeling it’s pretty far, but many people don’t extend Kathleen the same sympathy as Henry (ironically, it is Henry that extends Kathleen sympathy more than most viewers).

At the end of the day, the root cause is the lack of medicine, and FEDRA hoarding it for a price.

In one of the game’s theres a bit of minor trivia about the struggles of FEDRA trying to keep a QZ alive (not KC). They talk about how there simply is not enough food for the people, and their solution is to make increasingly minor crimes grounds for expulsion/death so that there’s more food per person. It sounds horrible, and it is. But at the same time, I really would not want the job of managing a QZ, and I think the regular person would probably devolve into something totalitarian like FEDRA.

  8. For context of those not played the game, the infected evolve due to how long you have been infected, so the boater was a person infected around 15yrs ago, so the shell is like armour bullets won't really take one down and yea, dont run into one.

  9. I was watching the post episode podcast the other day and Neil drunken the creator of the game Said when they came up with the idea of making Sam deaf he loved the idea but was disappointed that he didn't think of it for the game. Because it added character depth to both Henry and Sam. So they legitimately found an 8-year-old actor who is deaf. And they taught Henry and Ellie sign language which is pretty cool

  10. Yes, so I've beaten each game more than 10 times and have even played the DLC, This episode somehow, someway, hit even harder than the game. In the game, you spend more time with Sam and Henry (about 2 hours) , yet this episode hit way harder, that's impressive.

I'm just blown away from direction, characters, everything! Almost as if they knew what we were expecting and set up the show to purposely shoot us down. Amazing! Bravo! One of a kind! This has never been done before. All that we need is a movie and we also need that one to be a BANGER and we will have the first TriFecta show, game and movie ever!

  11. Yes! That "monster" is old. The more they "stay alive", the more the spores take control of the body and grows. It's better explained in the game I guess, but they did mention the Bloaters, as they are called. And it's funny that Ellie mentioned them in the second episode on that bridge xD
    Amazing react btw!

  12. Just for knowledge sake these are the stages of the infected we've seen so far in the show. I won't spoil the ones we haven't seen yet.
Runners: The first stage where the infected still have their site and the fungal spread is minimal but evident. (What Sam turns into).
Stalkers: Similar to runners but are more methodical in how they attack. More intelligent than runners. To the non-gamer it was hard to know that we saw this type already. This type is identifiable but a larger fungal presence in their body particularly the face and head. We saw a stalker under rubble in the beginning of episode 3 when Ellie searched the basement of the convenience store. Ellie kills it with her knife.
Clickers: We first saw them in Episode 2 in the museum when Tess gets infected. This stage is where the fungus spreads covering a vast majority of the body and the infection overtakes the host's eyes blinding them. They use their clicking sound as echo location much like bats.
    and finally,
Bloaters: This is the big guy we were introduced to this episode. The infected evolve into Bloaters with in dry locations. Bloaters are one of the most dangerous types as they are much larger and stronger. The fungus within their mass has hardened acting as a sort of armor making them much harder to kill. They have another ability within the game but we haven't seen it yet in the show so I won't divulge that info yet.

The show has done a great job so far and I can't wait to see how it all plays out for the rest of the season. 4 more episodes to go!

  13. Kathleen saying one person (Sam) isn't worth all this sacrifice, meanwhile she's losing men left and right, and ignoring the infected underground all to avenge one person too!

  14. This story is amazing. The themes doing the heaving lifting (survivor's guilt, trauma bonding, parental anxiety) are barely noticeable even 10 years later, but you as the viewer/player feel every bit of it even if you don't realize it.

  15. Funny easter egg: We first see a bloater in this episode. In the game, the fungus spreads through the air by spores so the player wears a gasmask in those encounters. The bloaters throw spore bombs at you to do damage. In episode 2 Ellie heard about "superinfected that throw fungus spores on you", and Tess laughs. It was a wink and a nod to gamers.
