So many thoughts… First time reaction to Judas Priest. Vocal Analysis of "Painkiller"

This one left me speechless. Today I am finally listening to Judas Priest for the first time… and what a ride! This is my reaction to their official video for the song Painkiller.

  1. What he did in the drum intro was a metric modulation. I haven't counted it, but it sounds to me like it's switching from a straight 16th (maybe triplet 16ths?) pulse to like quarter notes with a backbeat. It's a pretty jarring change in groove, but it creates a good sense of tension and release right out of the gate, while simultaneously setting up the groove for the guitar to play into when it comes in.

  2. Jesus frickin' Christ (Or Judas Priest, whatever…)
You don't do that with good music. I know you're a vocal coach, but Rock isn't meant to be analyzed, you're supposed to FEEL the emotions as you get into the groove.
Otherwise, glad you liked it… you just gave me a coniption every time you paused and went back to the beginning.
    Far out.

We blasted this song as well as "Run To The Hills" by Iron Maiden on boomboxes strapped to the front of our Amtraks during Desert Storm, you know, just to let them know the Marines were coming… sort of like "March of the Valkyries" by Wagner in the movie "Apocalypse Now".

The Iraqis didn't like it very much. I wonder why…
    Carry on.

  3. Best album in my opinion, 1976 Sad Wings of Destiny. Best Priest song that gives me chills to this day, The Ripper. Too short, but a good reason to listen to it again!

  4. Rob Halford is known for his screams, higher notes than most people can hit especially men, this song is not really how he performs most songs, he frequently has some very high screams but most commonly sings in a lower range than this song.

  5. Normally sings lower but can go high, this first and maybe only song mostly high, most miss when he goes low then high again and most reactors miss the long "Killeeerrr….pain" at the end. Im always impressed how long he could hold killer like that
