Small Businesses In India Make More Money Than Many Fancy Startups, Ft. Kanwardeep S, Native

Kanwardeep Singh has no qualms about not joining an IIM over an NMIMIS, as he himself says. What he does have is a successful business to boast about, and in part two of this conversation he will spill beans into the journey of building his business to moving out of it to try something else, and then coming back.

Kanwardeep had been amongst the lower ranked students at NMIMS, but had his eyes on one conglomerate during placements, Mahindra and Mahindra. Clearing all assessment rounds, he reached the interview round, and after having a fantastic interview, his candor cost him his then dream job.

Nevertheless, he managed to grab 6 offers from campus, the highest that year. Thus, began his long journey of landing into opportunities he didn’t intend for. Next in line, in the series of such opportunities was a job at BNP Paribas, where Kanwar worked for 18 months.

Kanwardeep had always wanted to build something of his own, even if it meant starting a Coffee Shop. He started, along with his friend, a bootstrapped recruiting business and ran that for two years from a shutter door shop, before finding their CEO.

Together they now run the second largest recruitment firm in terms of workforce. In between the four partners, they tried their hands at a lot of different businesses, and unfortunately none of them took off like Native. Kanwar shares the learnings from his experiences and some of his recruitment mantras.

Here are some highlights:
Candor can work wonders sometimes, but sometimes, it won’t.
Organisations are becoming more and more open to taking in varying personality types into their workforce.
Revolutionary businesses are built on Eureka ideas, but it’s rare to stumble across such Eureka moments.
It’s not hard to start a recruitment business. The real challenge is to grow a recruitment business.
Keep yourself open to trying out everything, as chance plays a big role in determining the trajectory of your career.
