Smackdown – Episode 26 – DIP v3 Brazilian Campaign

Shades of Trafalgar loom for the French as they risk it all on a massive fleet engagement in the Caribbean. In possibly the toughest fight yet in this campaign will Brazil’s capital heavy fleet be able to take on the much more numerous French?

  1. Great episode! Given the overall low number of capital ships in this campaign, I was wondering if we'd see a big battle like this. And I do like how shells that land in a closely grouped gaggle of ships will potentially hit a ship other than the target, which we saw quite a bit on this one.

  2. Brother, real talk, it's not that hard. To heck with the Islands, take over the French's U.S. territories while you have the chance!!! Not only is it better territory with gobs of port space and oodles of money to be had, but in a peace deal (should you decide to take it) the islands can be had for a song!!! Not to mention you can come back later with a much BIGFGER fleet to take over the French Home territory!! That makes the European spaces a fait accompli.

  3. Nice batle though I think forming one line was a mistake as it seemed too strung out to mutually support each other, perhaps 2 lines of 5 would have been better
Vanilla would have had those light ships charging with heavy gunfire being almost useless as DDs' shrug off full salvo fire from BBs

This might make you either, laugh of hit your head in disbelief but a French CL class I've been fighting is terrifying at any but the longest range.
It' is 1940 and the ship is around 8,500 tons capable of 28.5 knots carrying 7.5inch guns but not much armor. But the monsters are carrying FIFTY TWO torpedo tubes.
Yes I said 52. 8×5 above water and 12 underwater. The torps are 22inchers with a speed of 46.6 knots and 12.9km range. And the AI uses its standard suicide charge attack
Just a bit ridiculous don't you think?

  4. Relatório: Refit of the Iguatemi class of Destruidores. 49:27:

Diretoria-Geral do Material da Marinha: Relatório da Direção: 19-Aug-1948

Brief: The Iguatemi '48 refit will cover twelve Destruidores designed to a target displacement of 1,100 tons and a top speed of 36 knots. This wartime refit is made possible by the total destruction of the Marine Nationale. Once complete the class should be able to provide effective convoy escort.

Propulsion: The class has three double geared turbine engines provided steam by three induced draft boilers burning new advanced fuel oil vented though one funnels generating 2,188 indicated horsepower turning two screws for the required top speed on a design displacement of 1,081 tons fully loaded with a unbalanced rudder turned by advanced electro-hydraulic power for an operational range of 11,056 nautical miles. The class carries diesel auxiliary engines for emergency power.

Armament: The class' main battery is three triple mounts super firing forward and one aft bearing 4"/25 Mark 5 guns with 1" face and 0.2" top Modern steel alloy armor, turned by advanced electro-hydraulic systems with advanced automatic reloading, using modernized Coincidence range finders. The main magazine carries an HE heavy standard load of standard sized 62.5% Base Fuze HE and 37.5% Improved Capped Ballistic AP shells using Triple Base as the propellant and TNT4 as the bursting charge. One dual Mark 4 deck torpedo mounts with two forward, one aft and one per side launching a reduced load of 24" torpedoes with compressed oxygen aided combustion rounds out the armament.

Protection: Modern steel alloy armor is clade 0.8" on the main belt, 0.5" on the extended belt, 0.2" on the main deck, 0.1" on the extended deck, 0.5" on the superstructure, and 1" on the conning tower. The Class has a double bottom hull, reinforced bulkheads with water tight hatches separating normal compartmentation, counter-flooding systems, improved pumps and piping for flooding reduction. A crew of 84 officers and enlisted men will be provided cramped quarters. The class carries Radio Direction Finding (RDF), Advanced SONOR, and RADAR systems.

Construction: The refit will cover the ships Iguatemi, Bacalha D'Oro, Rio Negro, Lula da Silva, Guerilla, Psicopata, Rupp, Liana, Senna, Barichello, Piquet, and Massa. Refit time will be 2 months with a recommissioning time of 1 month. Valuation of each ship will rise to $37,098,810, and monthly maintenance in port will now be $1,298,458.

    Estadão, 18 August 1948

The Montanha, lead of her class of Encrouraçdos, and six Encrouraçdos Rapido, the class leads Goiás, Vickers, Louco, Foguete, and Brazilia, the the Brazilia class Nigella, pursued the remaining ships of the Marine Nationale, the seven Tourville class, Tourville, Alger, Pluton, Aréthuse, Descartes, Fortait, and Roland, the Guichen class Iphigéniam, and the Tromblon T-11.

They chased them to the north-east and eventually were able to run them down, with Montanha opening fire first with her 16” guns on the Roland. Then they sighted Forfait, Descartes, Tourville, and Tromblon T-11. Roland was sunk with 673 of her 773 man crew but was able to put three torpedoes into Montanha. This resulted in a flash fire that took off her A turret. Montanha had to withdraw. Forfait sank with 673 man as well. Tourville was sunk with just 240 of her 773 man crew. Tromblon T-11 has attempted to sneak around the battle line but was sunk with all but one of her 27 man crew. Descartes tried to charge the Vickers, took 309 casualties, and surrendered.

The Aréthuse was sighted and the fleet turned to close on her. They found Iphigénia leading Aréthuse, Pluton, and Alger. Iphigénia took damage and fell back, then Aréthuse was sunk with 680 of her 773 man crew. Pluton was sunk with 729 of her 773 man crew. Alger was sunk with 649 of her 773 man crew. Then the older Iphigénia was left. Rather more fragile, she blew up, losing 272 of her 284 man crew. There were 1472 survivors picked up.

Montanha took 85 casualties and Vickers 7. The entire fleet went into the battle 803 men short of a full crew complement but received crew drafts after the battle, Montanha 45 men, Brazilia 4, Foguete 13, Louco 30, Nigella 7, Goiás 24, and Vickers 14.

The defeat of the Marine Nationale at Battle of Christiansted, fought on Bastille Day of all days, has seen a revolt in France and the sacking of the Premier amiral de France Paul De Bon. He has been replaced by Amiral de France Ernest Grasset.

The new government lost their alliance with Sweden.

    The Battle Continues

In our last report the French Marine Nationale had lost all six of their capital ships, the Revanche, Provence, Dantzig, Alma, Alsace, and Danton, along with six escorts, having sunk only the Goiás class Doninha Selvagem. Croiseurs Cuirassés, Croiseurs Léger, and Croiseurs protégé remained, along with the Torpilleur. Aconcagua led Montanha, Vickers, Invictus Cohete, Nigella, Goiás, Foguete, and Brazilia in a circling movement to surround them. Louco had been ordered to retire.

The Embuscade, lead of her Croiseur Cuirassés class, was blown out of the water. Her sister ship Strasbourg was next up. She was lost to flooding. Amiral-Tréhouart was a bigger but older ship. Behind her was the Duquesne, another Embuscade class. The battle line concentrated on them as the Invictus Cohete detached to chase down some Croiseurs Cuirassés to the south. Amiral-Tréhouart was blown up and the battle line continued to circle in. Duquesne was flooded out.

The Jules Ferry class Croiseur Cuirassés Saïgon was the next target. Already flooded forward and amidships, she was attempting to limp away from the battle. She took another salvo and she flooded out. Sadly Vickers, one of the most powerful 14” armed ships, took a torpedo hit forward. Already flooded aft, she was ordered to retire.

The battle line was now Aconcagua, Montanha, Nigella, Goiás, Foguete, and Brazilia. Louco was awa, and Invictus Cohete chasing ships south, while Vickers withdrew. Aconcagua was now targeting the Suffern class Croiseur Cuirassés Kléber. A second salvo and she was blasted to pieces.

Protectrice was up next. A 16” hit in her engineering spaces, taking out two of her engines. Two more salvos and she too blew up. Fire was switched to the Dévastation. Aconcagua brushed her aside and then blasted her out of the water.

The bulk of the French fleet was gone. Montanha broke formation to chase the Croiseurs Léger Du Chayla while down south Invictus Cohete found three Croiseurs Cuirassés. She started with the Suffren class Bouledogue. Invictus Cohete nearly ran into some torpedoes but continued to pound on Bouledogue until she sank. Montanha had finishe off Du Chayla while Invictus Cohete took on the Jules Ferry class Caïman and the Suffren herself. Suffren managed to get a flooding hit forward on Invictus Cohete but she was taking hard hits in return. Again Invictus Cohete just managed to power past a torpedo strike. Finall Suffren was sunk, and Invictus Cohete turned her guns on the Caïman. Caïman was firing back, but her 11.2” guns were missing, until she got a magazine hit, at which point her aft turret was missing. She was finally sunk.

It seemed the battle might end when the Refuge and Paixhans were sighted. They were slowed by the Peiho operating with them. D'Entrecasteaux was also with them. Refuge was blown out of the water. D'Entrecasteaux was sunk by Invictus Cohete. Paixhans lost her 8.2” magazine when her forward turret was destroyed and the fire flashed to the shells. Peiho, still coal fired, had run out of fuel, and was a sitting duck. With little internal protection a flooding hit forward swept through the ship and she sank.

Eight Croiseurs Léger got away, the Alger, Pluton, Aréthuse, Fortait, Roland, Tourville, Descartes, and Iphigénia, along with the Tromblon T-11.

    Losses are still being tabulated.

    First Reports Are In!

The French came in from the north-east. Aconcagua led Montanha with Vickers, Invictus Cohete, Nigella, Goiás, Foguete, Brazilia, Louco, and Doninha Selvagem falling in behind, turning west to open their broadsides. The first ships sighted were the Revanche and Provence and mightily odd they were to see. They had their three twin 16.3” turrets on the centerline, but with a super firing pair aft and one forward, super firing over one of the quadruple 4.7” gun mounts. The other four were mounted two per side. Totally oblivious, Revanche turned east to open her broadsides. Aconcagua had to turn about to match them.

Alsace, Dantzig, and Alma were soon sighted, trying to get in order to follow Provence. They had put their main battery of three twin 14.8” turrets with the super firing pair forward, but the one aft was super firing over the twin 8.2” turret, and forward there was a twin 4.1” mount tucked under the super firing main turret. It was to say the least an odd arrangement.

The Hirondella and the three La Railleusee were moving forward to try and cut ahead of Aconcagua. Aconcagua opened fire and got the first hits of the battle on Hirondella. It took several salvos but Hirondella was sunk. The lead Destroyer torpilleur was the Gabion, which early reports missed. When she was hit Gabion was swept by fire, with her crew attempting to abandon the ship. La Railleusee was up next, and 14” hits from Nigella. One salvo and La Railleusee sank. Vickers then got a 14” hit amidships on Hova. Hova blew up.

The first attack on the Brazilian battle line had failed, but more Croiseurs Léger were closing to strike from the rear of the battle line. More ships were following the, and Aconcagua swung around the French formation as more and more ships were sighted. Finally Aconcagua opened fire on Revanche, only to have a 16.3” shell come in and demolish her main tower. Aconcagua returned fire and was able to punch a 16” shell through Revanche’s fore belt. Revanche was now moving counter to the Brazilian battle line, but this meant she was coming into range of the 14” guns. But when Revanche hit she hit hard. Revanche however was flooded forward, her funnels were destroyed, and she had 170 casualties reported. The last five ships of the battle line concentrated on Revanche while Aconcagua and Montanha targeted Alma and Vickers, Invictus Cohete, Nigella, Goiás targeted Tonnerre, which turned out not to be a Jules Ferry. Doninha Selvagem however was taking the fire from Revanche and Provence. The skilled crews of the Cruzadores de Batalha were opening Revanche with 14” shells like she was a sardine can. She lost her main tower and now had 260 casualties reported. Doninha Selvagem took flooding hits of her own and was ordered to retire. Revanche wasn’t better off but she continued to try and close as the flooding spread through the ship.

It was Tonnerre however who sank next. Having three ships with 14” guns firing on her was too much. The French got more than their share back by flooding and sinking Doninha Selvagem. She was the largest ship of the Marinha de Guerra Brasil ever lost.

Aconcagua turned the battle line back and this time targeted Provence. For some reason the French Cuirassés de 1er Rang were out front, their lighter escorts not moving up in support. As the shells found Provence her hull was ripped apart from the bow to the mid line, and she began to flood with over 200 casualties. She lost her forward main turret. But she didn’t sink, she simply broke to pieces.

Revanche, seriously damaged, had fallen back. The battle line however concentrated fire on her. With flooding forward and over 400 casualties reported Revanche finally took the 16” hits that shattered her.

The battle line fired on the Danton and the Dantzig. Try how she might to avoid the fire, shells kept hitting Dantzig until she got a magazine fire and blew off her aft 14.8” turret. She sank quickly after that. Alsace was the next target. She also lost her aft turret. Her antics however allowed Oriflamme to get into torpedo range, though Alsace was flooded forward and lost her main tower and steering. It was Danton that sank next. Oriflamme then paid for getting so close, sinking from the incoming sea.

In return Louco was ordered to withdraw with flooding fore and aft. Alma thought she could close into the battle line, but she soon lost her main tower and began to take more hits. She tried to head down the line from the Encrouraçdos to the Cruzadores de Batalha, trading 16” shells for 14”, but the Cruzadores de Batalha were the veterans. And though Alma was bouncing some shells, mostly she was being ripped to pieces. Alma broke up under fire.

Fire was put back on Alsace. She took blew up under fire.

    The Whys?

The Marine Nationale brought some ships that appear to belong more as a museum than in a battle; the Danton class Cuirassé d’escardre is 11 thousand tons, two twin 13.2” armed, 737 manned, 16.9 knots slow, and armored with up to 10.9” of iron plate, the Bruix class Croiseur Cuirassés Peiho, 5 thousand tons, two twin 9.5” armed, 17 knot slow, and 232 manned. She appears to have iron plate armor, two Croiseurs protégé, the 9.8 thousand ton Descartes, the Guichen class 3.6 thousand ton, 284 manned, 18.8 knot slow, two single 6.3” armed Iphigénia, and the Tromblon class 267 ton, 27 manned, two single deck torpedo launcher armed Torpilleur Tromblon T-11 which does have 28.3 knots of speed.

    Tactical Deployment.

In all probability, the French will form two divisions of three of their capital ships in one column or perhaps two, forming the center of their formation. Their fifteen Croiseurs Cuirassés will likely be in five divisions of three or three divisions of four and one of three, and these will flank the capital ships on their port and starboard beams, likely in mixed classes which may slow them. The eleven Croiseurs Léger will be in three divisions, again of mixed classes, and flanking the Croiseurs Cuirassés. The La Railleusee Destroyers torpilleur will be in one division, and may be held in support of the capital ships or they and the Tromblon T-11 may be sent forward to scout and attempt torpedo attacks.

The Brazilian ships would probably be in two divisions of four of Cruzadores de Batalha and one division of the Encrouraçdos. Recent battles suggest they will form two parallel columns with one Cruzadores de Batalha following the Encrouraçdos. They will then use their speed to kite away from the incoming French, targeting the two Revanche Cuirassé de 1er Rang for elimination first and then the three Dantzig class Grands éclaireurs d’escadre, taking out lighter ships as necessary, before closing in and mopping up survivors.

Our people hope and pray for the success and safety of our 15,374 brave sailors defending the Estado Novo do Brasil from the 32,605 man Gallic menace.

    The Strategic Situation

The failure of the French to get in on the dismemberment of the Spanish empire from the start of the war in 1946 by Brazil and Groot-Nederland has left the government of Troisième République Française in a precarious position with Paris mob. France feels as if they need to take a piece of Spanish territory second hand, and has thus challenged the Estado Novo do Brasil for control of the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean, which they would join with their French Antilles. As they are not openly at war with Groot-Nederland and their war against the United States can be finished anytime they can send ships into the Bearing Strait, they feel an attack against Brazilian territory would draw the Marinha de Guerra Brasil for a Decisive Battle with the Marine Nationale, as Mahan suggested, allowing them to then conduct commerce warfare against Brazil. This strategy worked as the entire capital ship force of the Marinha de Guerra Brasil has been recalled to the Caribbean to stop the French invasion. Only one Croiseur Cuirassés and two Destroyers torpilleur are missing from the Marine Nationale’s total force.

    The Contestants

The first class battleships present are the 64 thousand ton, four triple 16” armed, and 1688 manned Encrouraçdo Aconcagua and the 62 thousand ton, three triple 16” armed, and 1617 manned Encrouraçdo Montanha versus the 50 thousand ton, three twin 16.3” armed, and 1032 manned Cuirassés de 1er Rang Revanche and Provence. All the Brazilian ships present have a 30 knot top speed. The Revanche’s have a 29.7 knot top speed. Clearly the Brazilian ships have the advantage in volume of fire, though the Aconcagua exchange her secondary for the fourth turret. Montanha’s secondary is four triple 6” gun turrets while the Revanche’s have five quadruple 4.7” gun mounts. Their armor quality is comparable but the Brazilian ships have thicker armor.

The battlecruisers present, which this paper likes to refer to as Encrouraçdos Rapido but which the Marinha calls Cruzadores de Batalha and the Marine Nationale Grands éclaireurs d’escadre, are for the French these are the three French Dantzig class, Dantzig, Alma, and Alsace, 29 thousand ton, three twin 14.8” armed, 992 manned, and 32.5 knot fast ships, and for the Brazilians the two Goiás class 46 thousand ton, three triple 14” armed, 1366 manned ships Goiás and Doninha Selvagem, and the Vickers at 40 thousand ton, five triple 14” armed, and 1340 manned. The Dantzig’s carry one twin 8.2” gun turret as a secondary while the Goiás carry three triple 6” gun turrets. The Dantzig’s have armor up to 14” thick of a similar quality to the Goiás, whose thickest armor is 16” thick. Vickers has only 14” as their thickest armor.

The five remaining Cruzadores de Batalha are the 31 thousand ton, five twin 14” armed, 1451 manned, Louco, the two Foguete class 28 thousand ton, four twin 14” armed, 1133 manned Foguete and Invictus Cohete, and the two Brazilia class 23 thousand ton, three triple 14” armed, 1063 manned Brazilia and Nigella. To match against these the Marine Nationale has the four Suffren class 16 thousand ton, four twin 10.7” armed, 1141 manned, and 29.2 knot fast Croiseurs Cuirassés Suffren, Kléber, Bouledogue, and Refuge, which also carry fourteen torpedoes each, the 16 thousand ton, two twin 10.2” armed, 1145 manned, 20.5 knot fast Dévastation with an extensive 7” secondary, and four Jules Ferry 13 thousand ton, two twin 11.2” armed, 1251 manned, 17.7 knot slow Croiseurs Cuirassés, Tonnerre, Amiral-Tréhouart, Caïman, Saïgon. Dévastation as four underwater torpedo tubes and the Jules Ferry’s have eight.

    The Torpedo Threat

The Marine Nationale also has the five Embuscade class 12.6 thousand tons, 1565 manned, 29.7 knot fast, Croiseurs Cuirassés, Embuscade, Duquesne, Paixhans, Protectrice, and Strasbourg. They have modern armor up to 7.8” thick and twenty-six torpedo launchers, four quintuple deck launchers and six underwater tubes. They are however only armed with four twin 8.2” gun turrets.

The eight Tourville class 10 thousand ton, 773 manned, 29.2 knot fast, and three triple 7.4” armed Croiseurs Léger, the Tourville, Alger, Aréthuse, Du Chayla, Fortait, Hirondella, Pluton, and Roland, are also armed with four quintuple and two quadruple deck torpedo launchers. This makes them very vulnerable but also very dangerous.

The Dobourdieu class Croiseur Léger D'Entrecasteaux is 11.8 thousand tons, 939 manned, 21.1 knot slow, and eight single 7.1” armed, but has ten underwater torpedo tubes.

The three La Railleusee class 2 thousand ton, 208 manned, 31.3 knot fast, and two single 4.1” armed Destroyers torpilleur, the La Railleusee, Hova, and Oriflamme, each carry two quintuple deck torpedo launchers.

The only counter the Brazilians have is to keep their distance and take these ships out with their secondaries, if they carry any.

  12. That was an entertaining battle! Those French BBs were nasty, I suspect if they'd even had a couple more of them you'd have been much more badly hurt. Well armoured + accurate guns, it's nice to see DIP v3 working!
