Today I’m painting a simple, loose winter woodland scene with snow shadows and trees as the focus, using a limited palette of cerulean blue, cobalt blue, ultramarine, alizarin crimson, burnt sienna and paynes grey. It is inspired by the work of the amazing artist Andy Evansen, and by a photo from Pixabay: https://pixabay.com/photos/trees-pathway-forest-lane-snow-6899636/
The idea is to try to paint a wet in wet light background as loosely as possible, aiming to keep the sky light in the top right corner and to paint the snow with reflected light form the sky. Once dry, the trees and shadows are added.

I’m using Saunders Waterford 100% cotton hot press 140lb/300g weight paper, 11″ x 15″/28cms x 38cms, my paper is taped to my board with ordinary decorators masking tape and is at an angle of about 45 degrees so gravity will help me paint. I use various brushes as demonstrated in the video, but use whichever brushes you have.

  1. Very nice, thank you… I watch a lot of your work, and after ripping a painting once in art school my teacher said to me "You're unveiling a painting, not pulling a rip-cord"!! lol… Smart woman, I never forgot that lesson, and neither have I ripped anymore paintings!! lol

  2. I love this winter scene! I struggle with knowing when my painting is done, I like the tip that it’s better to leave it under painted than over painted. I just need a bell to ring or some obvious signal to tell me when I should step away from the painting 😂.
