  1. My method is a bit more unscientific. I put a few AI's on the track, slow them down a bit and follow 5 or 10 laps. After that I usually have the track down pretty well, enough to start working on specific corners and getting faster.

  2. I always just hop directly into a race against AI's where I basically just follow their lines and braking points. After about 5-10 laps I usually know the track well enough to have some good races. Your method is quite good as well though!

  3. Thanks for this. I'm so tied to blooming racing lines on games. I know I shouldn't but I find it intimidating to turn them off and just go out and learn the track. It's a great point its OK to crash when you start pushing just go back and perfect it. Thanks for this I will take this on board…

  4. Very helpful video for new Sim Racers, Mike. But speaking of SPA when you very first started your Channel – well I still don't know quite how to drive it (SPA), because I think you only got up to showing corner 3 (or was it corner 4, hahahaha ; )))

  5. i strat with a slow car, 911 or similar, learn the track, do 10 laps or so, then set a pr. then increase to a faster car,ie: 911R or a gt3, and set a PR. then pick an equivalent car, try and beat that PR. then proceed to the next faster class of vehicle, a hyper car or something.

  6. Great video Mike. I've learnt to count my gears as I drive, so apply those numbers to corners based on the car + sufficient practise time, and that's part of the way I learn a track. As I progress I can then try and take corners (usually higher speed ones) in higher gears. I also use reference points to count which gear I'm in as I pass them, which is another great way of improving laptimes without the need to look at any post-lap data/splits.

  7. My method was finding fun sim racing channels (like this one). When learning the Nordschleife I watched Jimmy Broadbent's Nordschleife videos, lap after lap my brain starting piecing together what the next corner is, where to break and be back on the power again. Just had fun watching and before I knew it, I was putting in good times with a sort of Jimmy's voice in my head. As Mike said, there may be better ways but it is just another option worth trying.

  8. Hi Everyone. Thanks for help, Mike! I'm 71, so not as quick to learn/remember new tracks. I use ACC, and not sure how AC compares. But what I do is set up a 10 or 15min 'Quick Race' in ACC with a couple 100% AI cars. At the end of the opening lap, I just pull in to pit and let the AI cars finish the race.

I then Replay the race, and Save the Replay. So then I'm able to switch to any AI car in Replay, either using a Driver Camera, or even a Follow Camera for the AI car, and Watch the whole race to learn where fast, slow, blind, etc. turns are in a lap. And I can watch the Replay as often as I feel the need. Of course, I don't necessarily trust AI brake points, etc. But I try to learn tracks that way. Hope this could be of some help to other Drivers. Works for this 'Old Man'! ๐Ÿ™‚

  9. Since last year I've been working on a full season of F1 2020. A few weeks ago I got to Singapore and was dreading it. It's a circuit that I can't even tell where the cars are on TV. Just 23 mainly samey third gear 90 degree corners and walls. I did two very slow installation laps and said to myself that this was hell, considered just taking DNF. But on the third lap everything clicked, set a top ten time and stayed there all weekend in the game. It turned into my best race by far (last to fourth in my own team car after taking a drivetrain penalty). The key was just not pushing those installation laps anywhere near how I do if I know the circuit well. I might start doing that even if I do from now on.

Also, for the F1 games anyway, Nico Rosberg's track reviews are invaluable.

  10. I did a driver 61 4 week course which I'd recommend. It's not super pricy for what it is and there's so much you can learn from them. One of the most important things I learned is to use your eyes more consciously and look further ahead. It's pretty obvious when Mike isn't looking far enough ahead because he's not accelerating aggressively enough on exit and not using the whole track. Your eyes are likely on the turn you're in instead of the exit curb, for example. No offence, Mike, your videos are great

  11. Good instructional video ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป I have had to do this in real life and on the sim. Probably slightly more cautious in real life!

Getting a memory map and references for braking is key, also the delta doesnโ€™t lie and monitoring this while you experiment is key.

My sim time and race car time usually are pretty close when I get to try a real life track for the first time that I have practised on the sim.
