There’s something about the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 that usually doesn’t get discussed: the reasons why they happened and what the men who did it, Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda, were trying to accomplish. It wasn’t just random chaos. I’m offering an online class at my website, SeanMunger.com, on “The Origins of 9/11” which will fill in this missing piece. This is the third of six videos about the class before its launch on November 11, 2024.
There are only 50 slots available, and many people are interested, so get on the waiting list: https://seanmunger.com/opt-in-page-origins-of-911
Just a few of the sources I drew upon in creating this class: Lawrence Wright, The Looming Tower: Al-Qaeda and the Road to 9/11 (New York: Vintage Books, 2006); Yosri Fouda & Nick Fielding, Masterminds of Terror (New York: Arcade Publishing, 2003); Jason Burke, Al-Qaeda: Casting a Shadow of Terror (London: I.B. Taurus, 2003); Nelly Lahoud, The Bin Laden Papers: How the Abbottabad Raid Revealed The Truth About Al-Qaeda, Its Leader And His Family (Yale University Press, 2022).

What would have happened if there was no 9/11? No US involvement in middle east?
Best of luck with your course Dr Munger! Really enjoying this series so far even if it is mostly preview of the larger picture. The bonus facts have been fascinating. Please keep it up 👍
Have you ever considered putting your videos up on Nebula? That way you could monetize your videos and still reach a wide audience. Nebula is a platform for educational YouTube videos. I would also like you to know that I greatly appreciate your videos and I find them very informative.
I've purchased your series of lectures on the history of conspiracies in the US. Though I don't have the funds to take this one, I can recommend to others to participate in this if they're on the fence. Good stuff!
Also, ensiferum shirt spotted 🤘
How dare YouTube hide this from me for two hours.
Do you plan to release the class on YouTube 6 months or a year on from now?
Not only did I get on the waitlist, but my school is willing to pay for the course as professional development! Looking forward to it
I’m fairly well educated on the things that you are going to talk about in this course and I fully approve.
I wish everybody could take a course like this. Hell, I wish I could take it anyway.
I never knew the US troops meant to deter an invasion by Iraq into Saudi Arabia was the big trigger until I saw it on a display in the museum at ground zero. And I took all of those classes in college 2007-2010. I visited the museum in 2014.
Love your work n understand the hustle but effectively making a 10min promo vid for your class is nuts
IIRC, there was a PBS interview in the late 90s where Osama Bin Ladin aired his grievances against the US. The US occupation of Saudi Arabia, support of Israel, and the US position against Palestine were among the reasons listed for the fatwa.
“Hey I can field an army of 100,000 unemployed disaffected youth to protect you, the guys at the top of the tree who are siphoning off all the profits of the black gold Allah gave us, and keeping all these youths under-educated, unemployed and disaffected… wait why are you looking at me like that?”
That’s almost as insane as Wolfowitz, Libby et al (allegedly) going “ok let’s chuck out Saddam so we can move all the US bases from The Kingdom to Iraq so bin Laden can’t complain we’re polluting holy soil any more”
Have you considered setting up a patreon to crowdfund hosting these kind of videos on youtube?
Wish I had the time and $ to take this course. I'm not a conspiracy theorist by any stretch of the imagination, but I've always felt that the mainstream narrative of 9/11 was dumbed down for the average American with a short attention span. And it's hard for us to accept the valid criticism of our foreign policy, which is something that must be done before we can accurately assess the motivations of our adversaries.
I abhor terrorist tactics, but I understand how a man like Osama bin Laden might begin to believe he has no other option.
Much respect for the amount of research you've put into this project, and best of luck to you.
Iraq didn't attack us on 9/ 11.
But, "plausible retaliation" was easy to sell to Congress. One voice, Barbara Lee, called for more analysis, and the death threats began.
It's always about the oil, or Israeli provocation.
It is true that there are US troops in bases in countries around Saudi, but there are no US military bases in Saudi Arabia. The US troops in Saudi are usually linked to training programs or similar activities.
Bin Laden family was allowed to leave the country, when all the planes in the country were grounded.
So wish I could attend but my responsibilities only allow for these videos as you release them. Sean, do you have recommended reading on dealing with the LEGACY of 9/11?
Dr. Sean teasing us to taking the class. Well played!
I'd just gotten back from a brief poor-person overlanding trip and I'd spent the trip in listening to downloaded episodes of Second Decade. It was very fun and interesting listening to you and Clay talking about War and Peace as my beater lifted Subaru dragged his exhaust system over the obstacles.
Thank you for making a fun getaway an intellectually fulfilling time.
I wish everyone who will take your class a good and insightful time! Sadly I cannot afford it, I would absolutely love to compensate you for your time more than watching your videos on youtube.
