I picked up this John Deere riding mower a little while back as a parts machine, or possibly to fix and sell. The seller said that this engine had internal damage. Lets take it apart and see if can be salvaged.

  1. Overreved with ether? It is amazingly clean in there. Definitely worth rebuilding it to me. Those engines aren't cheap, and that one doesn't look like it has many hours on it. And those 2 cylinder ones don't have the defective compression release, as far as I know. I would check the cylinder walls for damage, at least as much as you can see without taking the engine all apart. That thing could last another 10 years if the new owner changes the oil and oil filter regularly. Overheating from blocked and dirty cooling fins destroys many of those air cooled engines.
Would you believe a foot of snow fell in New Orleans on Tuesday. It got down to 8 degrees Fahrenheit in Slidell, on Lake Pontchartrain. I never thought I would see front loaders picking up full buckets of snow in the French Quarter. It looked like a scene from the movie, 'The Day After Tomorrow' around here. They just got Interstates 12 & 10 open on Friday evening. At least it missed the Superbowl on 9 February. The last comparable snowfall was in 1895. Just think, that was before automobiles, airplanes, and electrification.

  2. I think you hit the nail on the head as far as what happened inside that motor. My gut is telling me full speed ahead as far as rebuilding! If you wanted to play the extra cautious game you could pull the heads and take a look at the cylinder walls but I don't think they would've had a chance to get ruined, sounds like this thing revved to the moon and blew up in a matter of 60 seconds lol
