SANDWORMS (The God of DUNE) EXPLAINED

Hey guys what’s happening? Niyat here with film comics explained. As requested, today we’re going to be exploring the Sandworms featured in Frank Herbert’s expansive Dune universe.

The Sandworms, also known as Geonemolodium arraknis, Shaihuludata gigantica, and shai-hulud to the fremen, were the dominant life form on Arrakis before the time of Leto II. As with many Fremen words, Shai-Hulud is more than a descriptive term for a physical entity.

It alludes to the Fremen belief that the sandworm is a physical embodiment of the One God that created and governs the universe. Originating from the Arabic word Shayʾ-Khulud which translates to “Thing of Eternity” or “Thing of Immortality” – Linguistically, the many poetic translations all speak of the size, age, and power of the sandworm.

From “Old Man of the Desert”, “Old Father Eternity” to “Grandfather of the Desert”. The sandworm was an autotrophic animal that inhabited the planet Arrakis, basically an organism that can produce its own food using light, water, carbon dioxide, and other chemicals. In this case, the coveted Spice Melange.

Where they originated is unknown, but they were introduced to Arrakis before the events of the Butlerian Jihad. There they lived in the vast deserts and sand dunes that stretched across the surface of the planet. Attracted to rhythmic vibrations on the surface, they would breach in pursuit of the origin of such movement.

This was an effort to defend their territory. Thus, to see a worm and live to tell the tale was extremely rare. Unless you were a badass Fremen of course, who achieved mastery over the beast. For more on that, check out my videos on the Fremen and Paul Atreides, links in the description.

In this video, we’re going to explore the creatures in great detail, breaking down their lifecycle, physical characteristics, and the massive effect they had on Frank Herbert’s Dune universe.

  1. You shouldn’t really assume the worms have no need for or value of the spice simply because it comes from them. Much like worms on earth help fertilize soil through its consumption and excretion. The worms value of the spice may be specifically because it comes from them.

  2. Their dimensions seem off. At 400m long, 80m mouth, and 100m at their thickest, (even assuming their mouth stretched when opening to its full size) that would mean they’re only 4 times longer than they are wide. They wouldn’t be giant snake-like creatures. They’d be more like massive chubby leeches.

  3. nothing like a documentary of the made up science and biology of imaginary animals used as procrastination from doing paperwork. I imagine a bunch of middle aged virgin men playing dungeons and dragons debating the biology of sandworms and what not.

  4. I really miss the lightning and the internal fire from the newer movie… I kinda hope they bring them back in part 2, but I sadly doubt it. Which sucks, because it was an awesome biological addition that added to their almost supernatural status to the Fremen.

  5. I´m sooooo glad that the issue of worms = no water was actually solved in-story. The fact there was a plot point of ´desertification of whole planets is totally cool because it gives us fuel for space travel!´ really, really, REALLY rubbed me the wrong way…

  6. Fun fact: the only way to scientifically explain how sandworms move through the sand is this. They eat sand and to move that fast they shit it out to propell themselves through the sand. Seriously.

  7. So let me get the straight. In order to mate a female sand worm lures male sand worms to her location. The male eats the female, and the remains of the female release a poison that sedates the male so the eggs he consumed have time to be fertilized. Then he craps the fertilized eggs out when he comes to?

  8. So you're telling me that flying machine doesn't require a computer to fly or that radio to operate? If they're not even allowing calculators there's zero chance that thingy would fly like it does.

  9. I have often wondered how the BG's managed to get their hands on enough juvenile worm bile to make enough "Water of Life" to keep creating Reverend Mothers once Leto II cut them off. Or at all!?!? A Bile Black Market? 😮😂

  10. I always wondered what sandworms could possibly eat to sustain a body that large. Now I know they didn't need to eat anything.

But my new question is why they don't stick to themselves instead of attack anything that moved? Seriously, what could possibly 'threaten their territory' that wasn't obviously another sand worm?
