According to Iranian media sources, the president, a hardliner considered as a future successor to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was returning from a trip to Azerbaijan to commemorate the opening of a dam when his chopper crashed. According to state media, the incident, which claimed the lives of several other regime leaders, was caused by a “rough landing” in dense fog.
In a letter to Khamenei, Putin described Raisi’s death as “a huge tragedy” for the Iranian people.
“As a true friend of Russia, he made an invaluable personal contribution to the establishment of neighbourly relations between our two countries and made great efforts to elevate them to the level of strategic partnership,” Putin wrote in his letter, which was published on the Kremlin’s website.
“I had the luck of meeting Ebrahim Raisi more than once, and I will forever remember him as the most wonderful person,” said the letter.
China’s Xi stated on Monday that Raisi’s death was a tremendous loss for the Iranian people, and that “the Chinese people have lost a good friend.”
The Iranian regime is a strategic partner of both Russia and China. Last month, EU authorities accused the country of preparing to supply Russia with ballistic missiles for its ongoing invasion of Ukraine. According to Western intelligence authorities, China is a significant customer of Iranian oil, backing the country’s proxy conflict with Israel.
Tensions are already high in the region following Iran’s exchange of direct missile fire with Israel, which destroyed the Iranian embassy in Syria. The Iranian counterattack, which injured a seven-year-old Bedouin girl, was the country’s first direct attack on Israeli soil.
Iran has been a fervent supporter of Palestinian militant group Hamas, which is recognised as a terrorist organisation in the United Kingdom, the European Union, and the United States, as it has clashed with Israeli forces in the beleaguered Gaza Strip. Iran has also armed and sponsored the Lebanese group Hezbollah and Yemen’s Houthi rebels, both of whom continue to launch airborne attacks against Israel.
