Ripping out the ROT!! Project Sailboat – Sailing Nandji… Ep 304

The weeks are ticking by and yet there is still a tremendous amount of work to be done… https://www.sailingnandji.com

In this episode, we are scrubbing, cleaning, cutting, grinding, measuring, drilling, gluing, painting, fibreglassing and last but not least, swearing our way through this new Boat refit. We knew there was a lot of work ahead of us, but it easy in your mind to down play how much you actually need to do until the work begins. With some help from a few local tradies, hopefully we can cut through the jobs and have our New Boat floating sooner than later!

Removing the rotted cupboards, we are making jigs and cut out new pieces to replace them. Workers are making the outside look pretty as they sand the bottom and buff the topsides. The decks are scrubbed and the rotted floors are fixed and installed.

  1. She is coming together very nicely! Hiring some help will be a huge back saver and actually help you get her back in the water. I think what will determine how long you keep those teak decks will be how hot they get on your feet. I think you and the little will all need some deck shoes with teak decks. That said not replacing them right now will save you a lot of time and money. Also, you can decide if you even want them to be real teak in the future or fiberglass with the spongy teak looking pads designed to keep your feet from burning.

  2. Hi Bonita and Yosh, my take away from this episode is many observations. Two young Australians born into a country built from hard work, community, integrity, we were once called the lucky Country for all these reasons. Today this has changed immensely, sadly😢. These are qualities you both have, stay authentic as per normal, work hard in life for your dreams, your babies, you never sold out to agendas and today it’s very obvious who did, people will eventually flip over to those who kept their integrity in check. Don’t feel guilty about employing locals from other countries to assist, you are actually assisting these wonderful people to feed, home, build their own dreams in life for their loved ones, this is how our world should work, if many more worked on this mantra what a beautiful world we would be. It should never be about hand outs, but hands up! Help your fellow man so to speak.
Socialism, communism is oppressive, and should not be supported as we would never get to live our own dreams, sail on Nandji, you two are true blue! ❤

  3. My original belief that you are the perfect buyers of this boat remains unchanged. You totally understand what’s wrong and needs fixing – and most importantly you have the time, energy & skills to fix it. Most of the rest of us would be tempted to buy this boat but it would be financial suicide to then pay an army of professionals to fix it up. But you can do it yourself. A bit like building your own family home. An amazing self-investment in the next phase of family life.

  4. What a project, eh? Yosh and Bonita are so skilled it makes watching the progress interesting. Not understanding a single thing about yachts my first thought would be to demolish the interior completely and rebuild everything like new including all mechanical, rigging etc. I know it would be costly in the short term.

  5. congrats on the new boat– you are both amazing in what you have done over the years– you have tackled some huge projects both sailing and boat reparis. Re the teak decks. They're a pain in the arse and I have a personal policy of never owning a boat with teak deaks… However when you do need to change them, my suggestion is just get rid of the teak. Glass it all up and put non skid on. Its a big job but replacing with teak is hugely expensive and then in 10-15 years you have to do it all again… Phil
